Course summary

The BSc (Hons) Business Management provides a broad, contemporary business education designed around the organisations and challenges of tomorrow.

You will develop knowledge across management, leadership, people, strategy, enterprise and organisational performance while building the practical and digital capabilities needed to succeed in a changing economy.

The degree takes a people-centred approach to management. You will explore how effective leaders motivate and develop people, build organisational cultures and respond to complex challenges.

Digital business, AI, analytics and innovation are also central to understanding modern organisations. You will consider how technology changes business models, decision-making, customer relationships and work.

About this course

Business is about more than understanding how individual functions work. It is about understanding how people, ideas, resources and decisions come together to create organisational performance.

This degree provides a broad view of business while allowing you to explore contemporary issues shaping organisations.

You will examine leadership, organisational behaviour, strategy, people, enterprise, digital business and responsible management. AI and analytics will help you understand how technology is changing decision-making and business models.

A particular emphasis is placed on leadership and people. Successful organisations need managers who can communicate, motivate, develop talent and create environments where people can perform effectively.

Responsible leadership is central to effective modern management. Throughout the degree, you will explore ethics, responsible decision-making, sustainability and the wider impact of organisational activity.

You will consider how businesses can balance commercial performance with responsibilities towards employees, customers, communities and the environment. Themes connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will help you understand the contribution businesses can make to wider sustainable development.

The course combines a strong Lincolnshire identity with a global outlook. You will explore business challenges, markets and opportunities from local, national and international perspectives.

Lincolnshire's diverse economy provides opportunities to understand organisations operating across agriculture and food, manufacturing, tourism, retail and professional services, while also considering global supply chains, international competition, technological change and emerging markets.

You will also develop your ability to analyse complex business problems and turn ideas into practical recommendations. The programme therefore combines academic understanding with applied professional development.

Scheduled Teaching Hours

The Foundation Year is the first year of a four-year undergraduate degree and provides a pathway to undergraduate study for students who do not have the typical qualifications required for direct entry to Level 4. As an integrated Foundation Year it does not carry credits, as the purpose of the year is to facilitate students’ progression to Level 4 of their chosen undergraduate degree programme [see Undergraduate].

The delivery of the scheduled hours for the programme includes taught and independent study and is designed to support the needs of learners on Foundation Year programmes as they transition to the requirements of Higher Education study. Material is delivered in both face-to-face and asynchronous formats, totalling 176 hours of taught input, and includes both core academic skills training and additional input from subject specialists. Contact hours in taught sessions are complemented by an extensive support curriculum that operates through the year, typically comprising, but not limited to, additional tutorials, catch-up sessions, study groups, and personal support.

Entry requirements

Application for this course is via UCAS, although there is no formal requirement for UCAS points to access the course (normally GCSE English or equivalent is desirable). The Foundation Year syllabus does not include any specific element of upskilling in English language and you are not entitled to apply for Accredited Prior Learning, AP(C)L into a Foundation Year.

How you will be taught

Learning combines interactive lectures, workshops, business simulations, consultancy projects and employer challenges.

You will work on realistic organisational problems and develop recommendations, allowing you to connect theory with practice. Digital learning and applied activities will help you explore contemporary issues including AI, digital business, analytics and innovation.

Collaborative learning is an important part of the course. You will develop the ability to communicate, negotiate, present ideas and work effectively with others.

The degree places a strong emphasis on connecting academic learning with professional experience. You may have the opportunity to undertake a one-week work placement, giving you valuable experience of applying your knowledge and skills within a real organisation.

You will also engage with employer challenges, consultancy-style projects, simulations and authentic assessments. These experiences are designed to help you build confidence, develop professional networks and graduate with evidence of what you can do.

Consultancy-style activities will also provide opportunities to approach business problems from a professional perspective.

Assessment includes business reports, presentations, consultancy projects, dashboards, portfolios and reflective practice.

You will be assessed on your ability to understand business concepts and apply them to realistic organisational situations.

Assessment may involve analysing a business problem, evaluating evidence, developing strategic recommendations and presenting your conclusions to a defined audience.

This approach provides opportunities to develop both academic capability and professional confidence.

The broad nature of the degree provides flexibility across a wide range of careers. Potential areas include business management, management consultancy, operations, project management, people management, sales, business development, entrepreneurship and graduate management schemes.

The leadership and organisational focus can support progression into supervisory and management roles as experience develops.

For 2027/28 entry the UCAS fee is £34.50.
