About this course

Marketing has changed dramatically. Customers now interact with organisations through websites, social platforms, search engines, mobile devices, digital communities and increasingly AI-enabled experiences.

The modern marketer therefore needs to combine creativity with data and technology.

This course explores how organisations understand customers, build brands, create content and develop campaigns across contemporary channels. You will also consider how marketing contributes to wider business objectives such as customer acquisition, retention, revenue growth and competitive positioning.

AI and automation are becoming increasingly important within marketing, from content development and customer analysis to personalisation and campaign optimisation. You will explore these developments critically, considering both their opportunities and their limitations.

Contemporary marketers need to understand the ethical and social responsibilities associated with influencing consumers and shaping public conversations. You will consider responsible marketing, sustainability, ethical communication and the wider impact of business activity.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a useful framework for considering how organisations and brands can contribute to wider social, economic and environmental objectives.

You will explore customer behaviour, brands and markets from both local and international perspectives. You will consider how organisations adapt their marketing strategies to different audiences, cultures, markets and competitive environments.

Lincolnshire provides opportunities to examine marketing across sectors including food and agriculture, tourism, retail, manufacturing and professional services, while recognising that even locally based organisations increasingly operate within national and global markets.

The degree also develops broader business capability, ensuring you understand marketing within the context of organisational strategy rather than as an isolated function.

How you will be taught

Learning combines interactive lectures, practical workshops, simulations, consultancy projects and employer-informed challenges.

You will develop campaigns, explore customer behaviour and use digital tools to examine how marketing activity can generate commercial outcomes. Practical activities will allow you to connect marketing theory with realistic organisational situations.

Digital learning and applied projects will introduce you to contemporary marketing technologies, including analytics, automation and AI-enabled approaches.

You may have the opportunity to undertake a one-week work placement, giving you the opportunity to apply your marketing and business knowledge in a professional environment.

The degree also provides opportunities to engage with employer-informed challenges, consultancy-style projects and realistic marketing problems. You can use these experiences to build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative, analytical and commercial capabilities to potential employers.

You will also work collaboratively, developing your ability to present ideas, respond to feedback and communicate with different audiences.

Assessment

Assessment focuses on applied marketing practice. You may develop digital campaign plans, content portfolios, brand strategies, analytics dashboards and UX evaluations.

Consultancy reports, professional presentations and reflective portfolios will also allow you to demonstrate your analytical, creative and professional capabilities.

Rather than assessing only your ability to recall marketing theory, assignments will ask you to apply concepts to realistic commercial problems. You may need to analyse a market, identify a customer opportunity, develop a campaign and justify your strategic decisions.

This creates a portfolio of work that can demonstrate your capabilities to potential employers.

Careers & Further study

Graduates can pursue careers across marketing, communications, digital and commercial functions. Potential roles include marketing executive, digital marketing manager, brand manager, customer experience manager, marketing analyst, social media manager, content marketing manager, CRM executive, e-commerce manager and marketing consultant.

The degree also provides transferable skills relevant to business development, commercial management and entrepreneurship.

Further study could include postgraduate qualifications in marketing, digital marketing, strategic marketing, business, management, analytics or an MBA.
