Course summary
The CertHE AI Applications in Business introduces you to one of the technologies having the greatest impact on the way organisations work, compete and create value. The course is designed for students who are interested in AI but want to understand it through a business and organisational lens rather than through a traditional computer science pathway.
You will explore how AI can support productivity, customer experience, innovation, decision-making and organisational performance. You will develop an understanding of generative AI and automation while considering the opportunities, limitations and responsibilities associated with using AI in organisations.
The course focuses on application. Rather than simply learning about AI, you will consider how businesses can identify useful applications, design practical solutions and evaluate whether technology is genuinely creating value.
Alongside digital capability, you will develop human skills such as communication, creativity, critical thinking and judgement. These capabilities are essential when organisations introduce technologies that affect people, processes and decisions.
The CertHE provides a foundation for progression to the BSc (Hons) AI Applications in Business or entry-level roles where digital and business capability are increasingly valuable.

About this course
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how organisations operate. Businesses are using AI to analyse information, automate tasks, improve customer experiences, generate content, support decision-making and identify new opportunities.
However, successful AI adoption is not simply about having access to technology. Organisations need people who understand business problems, can identify appropriate applications of AI, understand risks and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
This course takes a business-first approach to AI. You will develop an understanding of how AI works at a practical level and, importantly, how it can be applied to organisational challenges.
You will explore areas such as generative AI, automation, productivity, innovation, digital transformation and responsible AI. You will also consider the human dimension of AI, including the impact of technology on employees, customers, leadership and organisational culture.
Understanding AI means understanding its impact on people, organisations and society. You will explore responsible and ethical approaches to AI, including questions around fairness, transparency, privacy, human oversight and responsible decision-making.
You will also consider how AI can contribute to sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while critically examining the environmental and social implications of emerging technologies
AI is a global technology, but its impact is felt within businesses and communities everywhere. You will explore AI applications from both local and international perspectives, considering how organisations across different sectors can use technology to improve productivity, innovation, customer experience and decision-making.
The Lincolnshire economy provides a valuable context for considering practical applications across sectors such as agriculture and food, manufacturing, tourism, retail and professional services, while recognising that AI-enabled businesses increasingly operate within global markets.
The course is therefore designed for students who want to work at the intersection of technology and business. You do not need to want to become a programmer or software engineer. Instead, the focus is on developing the knowledge and confidence to understand AI, identify opportunities and contribute to AI-enabled business change.
Scheduled Teaching Hours
Undergraduate programmes consist of 360 HE credits, with each credit equating to 10 hours of learning.
Depending upon the mode of delivery (i.e. face-to-face/in-person, online or a blend of these) and whether your course is full-time or part-time, the delivery of the scheduled hours for the programme will involve taught input, independent study, and where applicable, work-based or placement hours.

We welcome a range of qualifications that meet this requirement, including A/AS Levels, BTEC qualifications, T Levels, Access to Higher Education Diplomas, International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge Pre-U and the Extended Project Qualification.
Applicants from different educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply. We recognise that potential for higher education can be demonstrated through a range of qualifications and experiences.
If you do not meet the standard tariff requirement, you may still be considered through the University's admissions process where other evidence demonstrates your preparedness for study at this level.
International applicants may be considered with equivalent qualifications, subject to applicable country-specific and English language requirements.
No specific prior computing qualification is required. The course is designed around the application of AI within business and is therefore suitable for students interested in business, technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and the future of work.

In accordance with University conditions, students are entitled to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning, RP(C)L, based on relevant credit at another HE institution or credit Awarded for Experiential Learning, (RP(E)L).
How you will be taught
Learning is practical, interactive and digitally focused. You will combine interactive lectures with workshops, AI laboratories, practical experimentation and employer-informed business challenges.
You will have opportunities to explore generative AI and other emerging technologies, consider how they can be used to address organisational problems and evaluate their potential impact. Prompt engineering and AI-enabled workflows may form part of practical learning activities, helping you understand how people can work effectively with AI tools.
Innovation challenges and business simulations will allow you to apply your learning to realistic scenarios. You will also work collaboratively, developing communication and problem-solving skills alongside technological capability.
You will also engage with employer-informed challenges, business simulations and practical AI activities. These experiences will help you understand how organisations identify opportunities for AI and how technology can be used to address real business problems.
The course is designed to encourage experimentation and critical evaluation. You will be asked not simply whether AI can do something, but whether it should, whether it creates value and what organisations need to consider before implementing it.
Assessment
Assessment focuses on authentic business applications rather than simply testing your ability to recall information.
You may develop AI implementation plans, business consultancy reports, automation concepts, AI portfolios and business transformation proposals. Presentations and reflective journals will also provide opportunities to demonstrate how you have developed your understanding and how effectively you can communicate AI-related ideas.
Assessment activities may require you to identify a business problem, evaluate potential AI solutions, consider implementation requirements and make recommendations to decision-makers.
This approach gives you experience of producing outputs that could be relevant to the workplace. It also develops critical thinking, encouraging you to evaluate the limitations, risks and ethical implications of AI rather than assuming that technology is always the answer.

A CertHE is a one-year undergraduate qualification, so you will pay one year of undergraduate tuition fees.
