Students at Lincoln Bishop recently welcomed guest entrepreneur Lois Kirtlan, Founder of the innovative Whitby-based restaurant Hetty & Betty, for an engaging session as part of our Business Start-Up module.
Lois shared her inspiring journey of launching and growing Hetty & Betty, a business that has redefined the traditional fish and chip experience by blending heritage, quality, and creativity. Hetty and Betty is considered the oldest fish and chip shop in Whitby and its specialty of fish and chips afternoon tea has put the business on the map. Lois highlighted how she carved out a niche in a competitive market by staying true to her vision and embracing innovation.
Lois said: “As business owners, I think it’s important that we share our real-life business experiences, warts and all, to help inspire those starting their careers and entrepreneurial journeys. It’s also a great opportunity for me to stop and reflect on the growth and success we have had as a business.”
Lois' talk focused on the value of a compelling elevator pitch, and she offered practical insights into the challenges and opportunities within the hospitality industry.
Becky Goodman, Programme Leader for Business & Enterprise at Lincoln Bishop University, said: “We were thrilled to have the benefit of Lois' expertise for another year. Her story is a powerful example of how creativity and resilience can redefine a business and put it on the map for all the right reasons.
“Her advice on pitching and customer experience was incredibly valuable, and we’re so grateful for the time and energy she gave to our students.”
The session is part of the University’s commitment to connecting students with real-world entrepreneurs, helping them build confidence and clarity in their own business ideas. To find out more about Business at Lincoln Bishop, please click here!
