About this course

The BA (Hons) Business, Leadership and Management (Top-Up) is designed for experienced managers who already hold a relevant Level 5 qualification, such as the Operations Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship or the CMI Level 5 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Management & Leadership. This one-year programme enables you to build on your existing knowledge and experience to achieve a full honours degree in business, leadership and management.

On successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded the BA (Hons) Business, Leadership and Management (Top-Up) and may also have the opportunity to gain professional body recognition.

The BA (Hons) Business, Leadership and Management (Top-Up) will allow you to:

  • Develop your operational strategy, sales and marketing, project management, and wider leadership and management capabilities.
  • Study alongside peers from a range of industries and sectors.
  • Develop a range of skills, knowledge and behaviours that can be immediately applied to your role.
  • Achieve an honours degree qualification while advancing your management and leadership career.

Learning Hours:

The programme combines academic study with practical application in the workplace. Learning activities may include taught sessions, independent study, research and assignment preparation enabling you to apply new knowledge and skills directly within your professional role.

What you will study

Students on this course currently study some or all of the following modules:

This module focuses on “strategic choice” and translating strategy into action.

It will allow you to build your understanding of organisational strategy and planning in different business sectors and to develop the operational plans in order to deliver the strategy.

This module adopts an experiential and practice-based learning approach to support help you build your understanding of the role that finance and accounting plays in organisational strategy.

It considers financial strategies and the production of financial reports, looking at procurement, contracting and the legal requirements faced by business. It explores budgeting, sources of finance and basic financial accounting principles enabling you to access financial data and examine its validity.

Through completing the assessment for this module you will be able to: manage budgets, control expenditure and produce financial reports.

This module will help you develop a critical understanding of approaches for leading, managing and implementing change.

Through this module you will learn about strategies, skills and techniques to manage change with opportunities to draw on your own experience and organisation as well as examples from other organisations you may be familiar with.

Students will actively demonstrate an ability to lead and drive change within the organisation, identifying barriers/challenges and how to overcome them.

Many leaders and managers find it difficult managing change, especially if it affects people so models and frameworks will be explored to support learning.

This module explores the strategic management of human resources focusing on recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, talent and diversity management and workforce planning.

You will consider Human Resource practices in your own organisation (or one you are familiar with) in terms of the management of people and the contributions of the wider HR function to the strategy of the organisation.

You will be introduced to the theory of talent management, in addition, you will explore the place and purpose of performance management and appraisal and the concept of reward and recognition in engaging and motivating employees.

This module will introduce the psychology and sociology of organisations, and the important organisational structures and cultures needed to build resilient and sustainable organisations.

It will encourage you to think more critically about how culture, development and design affects an organisation’s resilience and stability through responsible leadership. The module will guide you to critically analyse the interrelation between individuals, groups and organisations and their influence on one another.

This module provides learners with the opportunity to critically reflect on their own management practice, experiences, and professional development to date. Through structured self-assessment and reflective analysis, learners will examine their approach to managing people, resources, and organisational challenges within their current or previous roles.

This module enables learners to explore how their values, behaviours, and experiences shape their management practice and professional identity. Through critical reflection, learners enhance self-awareness, strengthen management capability and resilience, and create a personalised development plan to support career progression and improve professional performance.

This module brings together learning from the programme and prior Level 5 study, enabling students to undertake a substantial independent project or dissertation.

Drawing on either a real organisational context or a theoretical management issue, students will apply academic and professional frameworks to investigate a significant business challenge and develop evidence-based conclusions and recommendations.

Dedicated supervision and academic support are provided throughout the project duration.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold one of the following:

· CMI Level 5 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Management & Leadership (or equivalent)

· Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship

There is no upper age limit for entry to the programme. Applicants must be aged 18 or over and a UK resident.

This final piece of work allows learners to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and professional expertise gained throughout the programme, while delivering meaningful insights and impact within a business or organisational context.

Assessment

You'll demonstrate your learning through a variety of engaging and career-relevant assessment methods, including presentations, business reports, portfolios, coursework, learning & reflective journals, and a work-based project or dissertation. Regular feedback from tutors, alongside opportunities for self and peer assessment, helps you track your progress, develop critical professional skills, and maximise your academic success throughout the programme.
