About this course

Every organisation needs people who understand both the commercial environment and the financial implications of business decisions.

This course introduces you to the fundamentals of business and finance and explores how the two disciplines interact. You will consider how businesses generate revenue, manage costs, measure performance, plan for the future and make investment and operational decisions.

Alongside financial knowledge, you will develop a broader understanding of organisations, strategy, people and commercial activity. This makes the qualification suitable if you are interested in finance but want to keep your career options broader than traditional accounting and finance roles.

You will also explore how technology and data are changing business decision-making. AI, analytics and digital tools are increasingly influencing how organisations understand performance and identify opportunities.

Business and finance decisions have consequences beyond financial performance. You will explore ethical decision-making, responsible management and sustainability, considering how organisations can balance commercial objectives with their responsibilities to people, communities and the environment.

The course also introduces themes connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), helping you consider the role business can play in addressing wider economic, social and environmental challenges.

You will explore business and finance within both the Lincolnshire economy and the wider global business environment. You will consider how organisations respond to changing markets, customers, competition and economic conditions.

Lincolnshire's agricultural and food, manufacturing, tourism, retail and professional services sectors provide valuable local contexts, while the course encourages you to understand how local organisations connect with national and international markets.

The course therefore provides a contemporary foundation for students who want to develop commercial awareness and financial confidence while keeping their future career options open.

How you will be taught

Teaching combines interactive lectures, workshops, business and financial simulations, consultancy activities and employer-informed challenges.

You will explore business and finance concepts through practical scenarios, considering how financial information supports decisions about performance, investment, growth and resource allocation.

Digital learning will support your studies and introduce you to the growing role of technology and data in modern organisations. You will also work collaboratively, developing your communication and problem-solving capabilities.

Consultancy-style activities will allow you to apply your knowledge to business scenarios, helping you understand how different parts of an organisation interact.

Employer-informed challenges, business simulations and consultancy-style activities will also help you connect classroom learning with the decisions organisations make every day.

The course is designed to build your confidence progressively, supporting your transition into higher education while giving you practical experience of applying business and financial concepts.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a range of applied activities designed to reflect business practice. These may include consultancy reports, presentations, financial modelling, dashboards, strategy reports, portfolios and reflective activities.

Assessment will require you to interpret information, analyse business situations, develop recommendations and communicate your conclusions.

Different assessment formats allow you to develop a broad set of skills rather than relying on one method of demonstrating achievement. You will receive opportunities for feedback throughout your studies to help you develop your academic and professional capabilities.

The emphasis is on applying knowledge to realistic situations and demonstrating how business and finance can work together to support organisational performance.

Careers & Further study

The CertHE can provide a foundation for careers in areas such as financial analysis, commercial support, business administration, corporate banking, business development, financial planning, operations and graduate business roles.

It can also provide a pathway to the BSc (Hons) Business and Finance, allowing you to develop your knowledge and career prospects further.

The broad nature of the qualification means that you can also explore careers where financial understanding is combined with other business disciplines. Potential areas include management, consultancy, sales, operations and entrepreneurship.

Further postgraduate study may also be possible following completion of a relevant degree.
