Recently, our first-year BA (Hons) Primary Education students spent two afternoons in local schools, as part of their module on the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Initially, they observed children in Reception classes, then returned to university to plan some activities for the children in connection with a story book. The students then returned to the schools the following week and delivered the activities to the children.

Louise Connolly, Senior Lecturer in Primary Education at Lincoln Bishop, said: “It was fantastic to see the progression in both knowledge and presence in our student teachers, particularly as this was their first experience of working with children on the course.

“The feedback from the students and schools was very positive!”

Feedback from local schools:

Ermine Primary Academy: “It was our absolute pleasure to have your students to visit. They were a delight and I know our children enjoyed it so much. We were particularly impressed with:

* How engaged all the children were

* Movement breaks had been planned in and used appropriately

* Great use of both the indoor and outdoor spaces

* Resources had been well planned and prepared in advance – all of them were really organised

* Resources were engaging and well thought out

* The story input really captured the children’s interests, they were all kept really well engaged and excited with the ‘hooks’ the students used. Some groups even took this a step further and linked their outdoor activities to the story input.”

Our Lady of Lincoln Catholic Primary School: “We really enjoyed having the first-year students with us and it was a pleasure to welcome them into our school.

“Your students were brilliant. I particularly enjoyed seeing how engaged the children were with the activities the students had planned. We have several children with significant challenges and additional needs, and the students were still able to successfully engage many of them, which was lovely to see. It was a really wonderful afternoon.”

St Peter in Eastgate: “We loved having the students in and see them grow in confidence during the session. The texts and activities the students chose captivated our children and they were all fully engaged.”

Lincoln Carlton Academy: “It was a pleasure to have the students in school. The activities were well thought out, and the children were engaged throughout. There was such a variety of activities that were developmentally appropriate and I particularly liked that the children were given a choice in some activities.

“It was lovely to see the support given to individual students and great to see some 'errors' picked up in a supportive way.”
