International Symposium to Continue Bishop Grosseteste's Exploration of Spatial Relationships

The OUP brings together a team of Medieval Historians, Philosophers and Modern Scientists from Durham, Oxford, Rome and Washington Universities led by our honorary graduate Prof Giles Gasper.

The aim of the project is to translate and edit the works of BGU's namesake Robert Grosseteste. Dr Jack Cunningham is a core member of this team and in the last three years his involvement with the group has taken him to symposiums as far a field as Oxford, Durham, Rome, Dublin and Montreal. Speaking ahead of the Symposium Dr Cunningham explained what attendees could expect to experience:

"The Ordered Universe's symposium at BGU is a hugely exciting event. It brings together an international field of some of the best Grosseteste scholars in the world. The work they do is of enormous important for advancing our knowledge and raising awareness of such a great thinker and the medieval world in general, and it is wonderful to have BGU play a part in what they do."

By 2020 the project will have translated, edited and published all the scientific works of Grosseteste for publication with the Oxford University Press. The Ordered Universe Project is funded by a £1 Million grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

The Symposium will include a free public lecture on Tuesday 14^th May on the subject of Creation and the World Machine: 13th Century Science and Religion. The lecture will take place in Teaching Room 1 of the Robert Hardy Building at 6pm.
