Health and Social Care Lecturer wins national award

On Thursday 28th November, Health and Social Care Lecturer Lorena (Lori) Hall, was crowned the winner of The Social Care Superwoman Award at the Woman Achieving Greatness (WAG) in Social Care Awards 2024.

Earlier in the month, after being nominated by a former student, Lori surprisingly discovered that she was a finalist for the award.

The purpose of the WAG awards is to recognise accomplishments across the entire social care sector, across all levels of leadership.

This year’s awards ceremony took place at the Bankside Hilton in London, which welcomed a room full of all female attendees who strive to make a difference in the social care sector.

Feeling very humbled, Lori felt privileged to attend the awards. Further to her surprise, Lori went on to win and was presented her award by Baroness Floella Benjamin.

The awarding body commented: “Lori’s journey from homelessness as a teenager to pursuing a PhD in social care, while lecturing at university, is nothing short of inspiring. Despite managing her adult son’s complex health needs and her own autism and ADHD, she never complains.

“She is passionate about making a difference for people with learning disabilities and future care professionals. Paying for her PhD herself, Lorena embodies the mantra, be a microphone, not a voice. Her selflessness and dedication make her a true superwoman.”

Lori commented on her achievement: “It is a real honour to win the award, but I owe all I have achieved to my son, who genuinely is the inspiration for all my work in the field.

“I feel it is also important to recognise the Health and Social Care team at BGU, who have supported me relentlessly in all I do and in all that we achieve together!”
