The new Framework will contribute to a better understanding of the knowledge exchange role of universities, and assist in the direction of the public funding that supports this function and mission area of the sector. The KEF will join the two other existing HE policy frameworks that relate to Research, and to Teaching and Student Outcomes.

Dr Andrew Jackson, Head of Research at BGU, welcomes the emergence of the Framework:

“The KEF is a promising new development. It highlights difference and diversity in the HE sector and the wide range of economic and cultural contributions that universities make to their localities and regions, rather than following the more established emphasis on national and global performance, position and ranking”

“The new Framework will also highlight the special dimension of “exchange”, and the mutually beneficial, problem-solving and creative relationships that universities ought to build, join and sustain within the places and districts that they occupy”

The Framework will focus attention on well-established and expanding areas of engagement of universities: creating external partnerships; working with businesses and the public and third sectors; promoting skills, enterprise and entrepreneurship; stimulating local growth and regeneration; developing intellectual property and commercial products and services; and cultivating public and community engagement.

Dr Jackson adds:

“BGU has an important local and regional knowledge exchange role and purpose. Its interactions with the educational and heritage sectors are well recognised and appreciated. BGU has also been expanding its knowledge exchange relationships and contributions in other areas, in particular with local businesses and in public health and sport”
