Education Studies and Mathematics student, Sarah Roff, recently celebrated her graduation at the prestigious Lincoln Cathedral, following three years of study alongside impactful volunteering.

After attending an Open Day where she had the opportunity to talk to current students about her subject of interest, have all her questions answered and explore the University on a campus tour, Sarah applied to Lincoln Bishop and later enrolled in September 2023.

Throughout her undergraduate degree, Sarah played a vital role as a dedicated volunteer at the Ermine Library and Community Hub - one of the University’s community focused projects, offering volunteering opportunities within the local community.

In her role as a Numeracy Champion, Sarah made a real difference to learners of all ages. Every Saturday, she supported GCSE students with their maths homework, helping to build their confidence and skills, whilst during the week she assisted adults completing numeracy challenges - offering patient, friendly guidance to those who need a little extra support.

Sarah said: “Volunteering at the Ermine Library has been amazing. I’ve been able to talk to people from the local community and interact with so many different people.”

With aspirations to become a secondary school mathematics teacher, Sarah took an important step towards her career goal whilst volunteering. With funding secured through the Ermine Library and Community Hub, she completed and successfully passed the iCQ Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

Lauren West, Social Purpose Project Co-Ordinator, said: “We are incredibly proud of Sarah’s hard work, commitment, and passion for helping others succeed. She has been an invaluable part of our community, and we wish her every success as she continues her journey into teaching!”

Following her recent graduation where she delivered an inspiring speech as a student orator, Sarah is returning to Lincoln Bishop in September 2026 to continue her teacher training journey and study a PGCE Secondary.

And her advice to prospective students?

Sarah said: “Attend an open day if you can! It’s a great way to see the campus, talk to current students and get all your questions answered.”
