Students and staff from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) jetted off to Rome to delve into historical, cultural and religious sites relating to their subject specialisms.

The History and Theology students spent a week exploring one of the world’s major religious centres, visiting a wide selection of unique and breath-taking sites from across history including the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountains and the Liberation Museum. In addition the expedition included a visit to the Vatican and St Peter's Square where the group were able to take part in a papal audience.

As the trip was designed as an enhancement element to the BA & MA Theology and History courses at BGU, every location had been assigned to a different student who then became the group’s tour guide providing historical and cultural insight.

Dr Claire Hubbard-Hall, Senior Lecturer in History at BGU, helped lead the trip and she described some of highlights as well as what the trip could offer to the students involved:

“Throughout the trip our students were able to gain first-hand experience of a wealth of historical and religious sites and objects ranging from the more well-known Sistine Chapel to the Capuchin Crypt which contains the skeletal remains of 3,700 bodies made into artistic displays by Capuchin friars in several small chapels.

"Trips such as this take education outside of the classroom and provide students with an amazing opportunity to broaden their minds which will, in turn, feed back into their future research and career choices. We look forward to running more exciting trips in the future”
