On Wednesday 21st May and Thursday 22nd May, the Ermine Library and Community Hub, hosted two days of exciting events to mark National Numeracy Day 2025.

The theme of this year’s National Numeracy Day was money. Children were invited in to ‘purchase’ items of food and drink, with pretend money at the Teddy Bear Shop, and then enjoy eating them at a Teddy Bears Picnic.

Run by BGU with the support of volunteers, the Hub provides library services and community focused activities.

Regarded as an inclusive and accessible space in the community, it plays a vital role in empowering the local community, providing a place where people can come together, take ownership, and actively participate in shaping and delivering activities.

Some parents and guardians reviewed the day: “A lovely idea to encourage handing over ‘money’ to get something in return.”

“A great way to learn the value of money in a fun way.”

“A nice experience to do some money counting with my 4-year-old.”

“Lovely to see money still being used.”

During their visit, families were also given the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor area, plant seeds and grow their measuring skills.

Sarah Moseley, Head of Social Purpose at BGU, said: “For the first time National Numeracy Day had a theme, which was money!

“It was great to see so many parents and carers engaging in activities with children to show them the link between numbers and money.”
