At the penultimate event of interesting, diverse and thought-provoking events at Lincoln Bishop University to celebrate Black History Month (BHM) 2025, Artist in Residence, Tinashe Chipawe, and Lincoln Bishop Lecturer, Lori Hall, led an evening of a celebration in poetry!

Attendees from across the community joined together on campus in the Eliot Room, alongside special guest Member of Parliament (MP) for Lincoln, Hamish Falconer – who thanked Lincoln Bishop University for its significant and county-leading contribution to the celebration of Black History Month.

During the workshop, attendees were invited to respond to a range of photographs and to record words and ideas inspired by this year’s BHM national themes of ‘Power, Pride and Resistance’. The ideas produced were amalgamated and combined through discussion and collaboration to form 12 poems, to be shared on an Ezine and posted on our website.

Black History Month at Lincoln Bishop is coordinated by Associate Professor, Sheine Peart. Sheine shared how much she values our university’s promotion of the initiative: “It is energising to see the commitment of the University, enabling members of the Lincolnshire community to join us to celebrate and explore ways of working collaboratively to promote unity."

Lori Hall, who co-facilitated this event, added: “I very much enjoyed the opportunity to enable this vibrant and creative workshop, showcasing the power of art to change thinking, bring discussion and ignite conversation."

The co-facilitator of the event was Artist in Residence at the University for October, Tinashe Chipawe, whose work has been on display in the Robert Hardy Building throughout the month. Tinashe draws inspiration from his Zimbabwean roots, aiming to amplify the voices of marginalised communities and to promote inclusivity and equality.  His vibrant and experimental work reflects his vision for a more inclusive and optimistic society!

Lincoln Bishop annual celebration of Black History Month concluded on Thursday 30th October with a virtual tour of Lincoln's Black History led by Professor Heather Hughes and Dr Victoria Araj.

Sheine Peart is already planning events for next year, so if you are interested in becoming involved, or have ideas or suggestions for events to share, please contact sheine.peart@lincolnbishop.ac.uk
