New Book Aims to Help Support Autistic Children by Exploring the ‘Two Sides to Every Story’
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) was proud to host the launch of ‘Exploring Theory of Mind with Children & Young People on the Autism Spectrum’ the latest book by Dr Clare Lawrence, Senior Lecturer in Secondary Education at BGU. Subtitled ‘Two Sides to Every Story’, the book explores how theory of mind differences, and the difficulties created by different viewpoints, can lead to frustration and confusion for children with autism. This exploration is lead by carefully structured stories featuring Bryn, who is autistic, his mother and their ‘Wise Dog’. All involve frustrating or confusing social events that befall Bryn leading to meltdowns with each story then told again from another viewpoint. Each night, Wise Dog talks to Bryn and helps him understand what has happened. Alongside the stories of Bryn, his mother and Wise Dog are a wide selection of activities which are based around the stories and are designed to further the reader’s understanding of the challenges faced by children with Autism. These activities include story board and role-playing exercises which are perfect for parents and children to work through together or for teachers to use in classroom situations. Speaking at the launch Clare discussed the positive impact she hoped the book would have: “I’ve been working on this book for a long time and I’m delighted to now see it finished and available for people to enjoy and learn from. The ability to interpret different viewpoints can be a real struggle for children with autism who, due to theory of mind differences, see their version as the truth. My hope now is that this book can educate those who come into contact with children on the spectrum on how to interact with and support children with viewpoint so different to their own”. Clare was supported in the creation of the book by her BGU colleague Aimee Quickfall, Head of Programmes Primary & Early Years ITE, who provided illustrations. ‘Exploring Theory of Mind with Children & Young People on the Autism Spectrum’ is available now. Early Childhood Studies
The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies is a three-year undergraduate programme which introduces students to aspects of education, health and social care, with a specific focus on children from 0 – 8 years of age. The course offers graduates a range of employability opportunities with module content supporting students in developing a wide range of transferable skills, as well as providing a curriculum which enables students to develop their academic skills. Students who graduate from the programme will be awarded a full and relevant degree enhancing employability by enabling them to seek roles in early childhood settings as part of the adult: child ratio. Furthermore, students may also choose to work towards an award which embeds graduate practitioner competencies into their study. -

EdD (Doctorate of Education)
The Doctorate of Education (EdD) is the premier academic qualification for experienced professionals working in the education sector. The EdD is ideally suited to those who benefit from studying in a structured, collegiate environment with the first two years comprising taught modules. These modules enable the development of research skills and the intellectual rigour demanded of professionals at doctoral level. They also provide the foundation for the subsequent period of study, the thesis stage, during which a thesis is written focused on an area of professional interest. Lincoln Bishop's continuing success in research, as demonstrated in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework exercise, gives us a significant presence within an increasingly competitive, research-intensive sector. Lincoln Bishop offers a single entry system every Autumn, in October. -

Ami Montgomery
Ami Montgomery is Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Education and Head of School for Teacher Education at Lincoln Bishop University, providing strategic leadership across the Faculty’s full portfolio of Education and Professional programmes, including Initial Teacher Education (ITE), postgraduate education, and professional development. She is also Centre Manager for the Bell Foundation Centre of Expertise for EAL, leading national CPD programmes and embedding linguistic inclusion across teacher education and school partnerships. Dr Angela Barley
Angela joined Lincoln Bishop in August 2015, after two years as the primary manager for a nationwide teacher training company. Angela managed a programme which led to QTS/PGCE for both SCITT and School Direct trainees and was involved with both QTS and PGCE marking and assessment. She also designed and delivered training sessions which were delivered nationally as part of this role. Angela worked for Lincolnshire County Council/CfBT from 2008 to 2013 as an Early Years Consultant working with local schools and settings on improving provision and raising standards for young children. Angela designed and delivered EYFS training for both early years’ setting and school practitioners. Angela was also an area SENCo for a small group of nurseries in Lincolnshire within this role. Angela is an accredited EYFS Profile moderator and was part of the local authority moderation team, arranging and leading moderation events across the county. Angela also taught for eight years in a large primary school, leading Literacy across the school. Teaching Angela is the Cohort Leader for the Primary Teaching Studies (5-11) programme. She also works across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within teacher development. Angela has a particular interest in the areas of the EYFS, Phonics, early language and assessment within the EYFS. Angela works as a University Based Mentor across undergraduate and postgraduate teacher development programmes. She is part of the university working groups for Early Years, Phonics and English. Angela is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
