Yvonne Nicholson, a dedicated foster carer who has provided care for over 600 children, visited campus in early May to talk to our foundation degree students about her experience.

Throughout her fostering journey, Yvonne has established a depth of experience. Our staff, and students studying education and teaching, were grateful to hear and learn from her – as part of their Safeguarding and Empowering Relationships modules.

In particular, she has supported children who have experienced various forms of abuse, children with terminal illnesses, those awaiting adoption, teenage mothers, children with disabilities, and families in crisis who needed temporary support until they were able to resume care for their children.

Yvonne’s visit offered students a valuable opportunity to ask questions and gain insight into real-life examples of supporting children facing complex and often traumatic circumstances.

Dr Nyree Nicholson, Programme Leader for Professional Studies at BGU, said: “The benefit for our students of hearing from guest speakers, like Yvonne, is being able to link theoretical concepts with real world examples, especially when there has been no experience of the topic.”

Her contribution significantly deepened the students’ understanding of the vital role foster carers play; not only in caring for vulnerable children but also in working collaboratively with professionals to provide holistic support.

Yvonne said: “One of the key messages I wanted to share with students is that abuse and neglect transcend class boundaries – it’s vital to understand that these issues can affect children from any background.

“It’s not about where a family lives or what they earn; it’s about being alert to the signs and always keeping the child’s voice at the centre of practice.”

Students reviewed the session positively:

“It was so interesting thank you!”

“I really enjoyed listening to her stories.”

“I could have listened to her talk all night. Thank you.”
