Iconic people
For BHM 2025 we have chosen to highlight three incredible people, who make or have made, a difference for the Black community.
Lilian Bader
Lilian Bader (1918–2015) was one of the first Black women to serve in the British armed forces. Despite early discrimination, she joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force in 1941, becoming a corporal and a skilled instrument repairer. After World War II, she earned a university degree and became a teacher. Bader’s legacy is one of resilience and service, breaking racial and gender barriers in the military and education. Her life continues to inspire and represents a vital contribution to both Black British history and the broader fight for equality in the UK.

Lesego Chombo
Lesego Chombo is a trailblazing Botswanan leader, crowned Miss Botswana 2022 and Miss World Africa 2024. At just 26, she became Botswana’s youngest-ever cabinet minister, now serving as Minister of Youth and Gender. A qualified lawyer and founder of the Lesego Chombo Foundation, she champions youth empowerment, gender equity, and rural development. Chombo uses her platform to drive tangible social change, advocating for inclusive policies and stronger protections against gender-based violence. Her rise reflects a new generation of African leadership - passionate, driven, and deeply committed to creating lasting impact for young people and marginalized communities.
George Imafidon MBE
George Imafidon MBE is a humanitarian engineer and social impact leader from South London, dedicated to empowering underrepresented youth in STEM. As CEO of Motivez, he creates pathways for young people to access careers in science and technology. Named Young Engineer of the Year in 2022, he also works as a Race Engineer for Sir Lewis Hamilton’s Team X44 and sits on the boards of The Hamilton Commission and Co-op Foundation. A driving force for equity and innovation, George was awarded an MBE in 2023 for his services to youth in STEM and continues to inspire change across sectors.
