What is clearing?

Clearing is a part of the university application process that allows students who are not currently holding any offers to secure a place on a university course that still has spaces available for enrolment in September/October 2026.

Who is clearing for?

Students can enter into clearing for a variety of reasons, including:

  • They didn’t meet the entry requirements or conditions of their first-choice or insurance university
  • They exceeded the entry requirements of their first-choice university
  • They applied for the first time after 30th June 2026
  • They didn’t receive any offers
  • They declined their place

How can I best support my loved one?

Be as positive and supportive as possible. The best thing you can do is to help them stay calm and reassure them that there’s plenty of time to take a step back and not rush into making a decision.

Your support can make all the difference. You might:

  • Help research courses and universities
  • Encourage them to attend our Clearing Open Day
  • Support them through calling our Clearing Hotline and initiating the student finance process.
  • Provide reassurance and emotional support as they transition into university life.
  • Assist with practical aspects such as accommodation, budgeting, and moving day.
Refectory-3

Don’t be too fearful of university. The best thing a parent can do is take a step a back, because your child will need to take a massive step forward on their own. You can absolutely continue to support them.
