British Education Research Association Shines a Light on BGU Project Aiming to Build Teacher Confidence in Supporting Pupils from Diverse Backgrounds
The British Educational Research Association (BERA) has published a new blog post highlighting the work of academics from Lincoln Bishop University (Lincoln Bishop) who are leading a project to help trainee teachers gain confidence in teaching pupils from diverse backgrounds by developing teaching resources about BAME communities. The cross-departmental project, takes in work from three academics across different parts of the university; Dr Sheine Peart, programme leader for the Doctor of Education, Dr Hadiza Kere Abdulrahman, senior lecturer in inclusive education, and Dr Clare Lawrence, senior lecturer in teacher development. Speaking following the BERA coverage Dr Lawrence discussed the projects background: “This project builds on the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion work already being carried out in our secondary PGCE programme, which is promoted by Zoe Nye and Lyndsay Muir. Aspiring teachers get creative
A cohort of future teachers recently had the opportunity to flex their creative muscles during a full-day workshop exploring creativity in education. The events of the day aimed to empower the soon-to-be educators with tools and techniques to integrate creativity into their teaching practices, enabling them to create a dynamic and stimulating learning environment for their students. The Primary Education students enjoyed workshops, group tasks, and open discussion about the subject. Guest speakers also shared their expertise on the module subject, which is all about the curriculum choices a school may make. Across the day, three speakers worked with the group, including actor, writer, and teacher Ben Keaton from Creativity Academy, an organisation that visits schools and delivers workshops 'to give primary school teachers and their students the joy of making things.' BGU Senior Lecturer Emma Rogers said: "I'm really grateful that Ben Keaton was able to join us for the morning to share the work on creativity that his Creative academy is doing in schools around Lincolnshire." The students also heard from Liam Bielby, an Assistant Mathematics Hub Lead from the East Midlands East Maths Hub. Liam shared with the students the work of the maths hub and how they work with schools in the local area and the support available for early career teachers Kateřina Dvořáková also visited the university from Czechia. As the Senior lecturer at the Faculty of Education, University of South Bohemia, Kateřina specialises in pre-service training of primary English teachers. She said: "My stay at BGU was absolutely fantastic. I I could observe a number of lessons and the teaching practice of the TESOL students. "There have been several students from our university at BGU recently and more study visits are being planned. A semester at BGU can help our students improve their English and teaching skills and learn about Britain's culture and daily life." Kateřina gave BGU students a fascinating insight into teacher training in Czechia. Students heard that, in her country, it takes five years to train to become a Primary school teacher so all teachers have a Master's qualification. Emma Rogers added: "It was an insightful and productive day for students and staff alike. "Everyone really enjoyed hearing from all three speakers, who offered the students a diverse selection of different voices and experiences." -
Sports students host nearly 300 local children for rugby megafest
Over 290 primary school children from 18 different schools across Lincolnshire took part in the annual Tag Rugby Megafest at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU). This event, now in its seventh year, sees Sport undergraduates provide children with a fun-filled day of learning and playing rugby. The festival is an opportunity for first and second-year BGU students studying sport to put theory into practice. During the morning, the children were taught basic rugby skills such as teamwork, social skills, catching and throwing, and the rules of the game. In the afternoon, the children had a chance to join with other schools and put their newly acquired rugby skills into practice during a game. The match was led by BGU students and the children were awarded stickers for different skills they achieved during the day. The festival provided a platform for the students to develop their teaching skills and offered an opportunity to support each other and learn from one another. Hollie Tawn, who is in her first year of studying Psychology and Sport said: "We really benefitted from having the support of the second-years who have done this before and were able to guide us during the day. It was really nice to have the opportunity to work with the children and express myself through sport activity." Second-year Sport, Coaching & Physical Education student Jon Smith said it was quite eye-opening to return to the event a year later. He said: "It's a fun-filled day for the children, but it's also a really interesting experience for us as undergraduates. It was clear how much I've developed since this time last year and it just shows that all the practice and hard work pays off!" What makes this year's festival unique is the return of three BGU alumni (below) who previously studied Sport and Education at the university and now work as teachers in three of the participating schools. Their return to campus serves as a reminder to current students of the exciting career opportunities that could be in store for them in the field of sports education. It's also a great chance for the visiting children to learn new skills, have fun, and be active. "For our first and second-year students, the festival represents a chance to put their academic knowledge into practical use and benefit from peer learning. For the participating children, the festival offers a fun-filled day of skill-building, social development and encouragement to get moving!" After seven successful years, the event has become a highly anticipated fixture on the academic calendar for the participating children and BGU students alike, offering a unique opportunity to develop essential skills and knowledge in a fun, supportive environment. BGU Graduate shares her Psychology dissertation with Alopecia UK.
Bethany Hills, a 2020 Education Studies & Psychology graduate from Bishop Grosseteste University, has written an article for Alopecia UK discussing her research project which explored the impact of support charities on parents of children with alopecia. The semester before I started my Psychology dissertation, we had to do a pilot study in health psychology. During this module, I realised I could have done mine on Alopecia but was too late to change my idea. When it came round to thinking of ideas for my dissertation, I wanted something that I was interested in as well as something that had a personal connection. I started writing ideas down and the two that stood out to me was mental health and Alopecia, so I decided to combine the two topics. I also have someone very close to me who has Alopecia and have seen the amazing work Alopecia UK have done so wanted to incorporate them into my project too. Students from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) to cycle length of Ukraine in fundraiser
A group of students and some staff members are attempting to cycle 364.4 miles (north to south of Ukraine) in 12 hours to raise money for the Ukraine Appeal run by Save the Children. The students from the three-year Primary Education course wanted to do something to support the Ukrainian children that are at risk as the conflict continues. The ‘BGU Cycle for Ukraine’ challenge will begin at 9am just inside Hardy Building on two static bikes, with students needing to cover 30 miles every hour to reach their target of 364.4 miles by 9pm. Around 15 third year students and five members of staff have agreed to take part throughout the day, and the progress will be shared on BGUs Instagram account. The bikes have been loaned from the BGU sports centre and the catering team will be providing refreshments for the 15 third year students and five members of staff that have signed up to take part throughout the day. Save the Children’s Ukrainian crisis response aims to reach 3.5m vulnerable children and their families through distributing supplies, providing assistance for basic needs such as food, rent and medicine and offering vital mental health and psychosocial support. Dave Wallace, Senior Lecturer in Primary Education, said: “Like many people we’ve been watching the conflict in Ukraine unfold, and we all wanted to do something to help. Student Research Studies Form Part of New Oxford Press Collection
A new collection from Oxford Press, featuring original research studies from two Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) students and edited under the supervision of Dr. Maria Efstratopoulou, Senior Lecturer in Special Educational Needs at BGU has been released. The Collection, titled ‘Interdisciplinary Reflections and Socio-Cultural Issues in Education: Anthropological, Legal and Educational Views for Vulnerable Groups’, highlights the latest knowledge and new ideas as “food for thought”, which can be applied in peoples’ everyday life, and particularly in the everyday educational practice. The two BGU students, Sue Wood a Doctoral Candidate, EdD from BGU presenting a part of her Doctoral Thesis and Abigail MacDougall, a SENI graduate in 2019, have each submitted a chapter for the book under Dr Efstratopoulou’s supervision. Sue’s chapter explores ‘Assessment in Special Education: Improving professionals’ skills using video footage’ whilst Abigail’s investigates Parents’ perceptions of the impact of early stage exam tests on anxiety levels in young children with and without Autism. The full book presents current socio-cultural issues for discussion, trying to enhance the quality of teaching and increase students’ interest and inclusion. Its first part presents this new era with new needs that have arisen and the second one, ideas for practice and methodological issues. It refers to young and experienced teachers of all levels, psychologists, social workers and people who work in education and provides material for thought and reflection. The texts include current topics such as Education and Leading Strategies in Special Education as well as topics related to increasing motivation in the educational process.
