On Tuesday 8th October, we signified the start of a new academic year with our annual, traditional Matriculation ceremony held at the prestigious Lincoln Cathedral, located in the heart of the city.

All our newly enrolled undergraduate and postgraduate students are invited to the Matriculation ceremony, where they have the chance to meet each other and the university staff, while getting a glimpse inside the venue where most will be graduating at the end of their studies.

Matriculation is a time-honoured tradition for few universities across the UK, signifying the formal enrolment of students, in which their names are placed upon the matricula role, and they receive a commemorative badge to celebrate them enrolling at BGU.

The date for Matriculation this year fell on Robert Grosseteste Day, which is celebrated on 8 October. The University’s namesake Robert Grosseteste was a former Bishop at Lincoln Cathedral in the 13th Century, and medieval scientist, philosopher, and educator.

This year’s Matriculation ceremony featured addresses by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Tom Dannatt, Students’ Union President, Max Gordon, Senior Lecturer for the Foundation Year Programme, Dr Adam Foxon, and Dean of Chapel and Chaplain, Reverend Dr Peter Green.

Closing orations were delivered by second year BA (Hons) Business with Finance student, Rebecca Midgley.

The ceremony concluded with a performance by our wonderful BGU choir. In line with tradition, the procession then made its way to the Dean's Green, for the taking of the annual photo of matriculating students.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Tom Dannatt, said: “The Matriculation Ceremony marks our student’s formal entry into the University.

“In addition to serving as a warm welcome to those starting their studies with us, it marks their entry into BGU’s academic community, of which every student in an integral member.”

If you missed the ceremony, you can watch it here.
