We have announced the recipients of our 2026 Honorary Awards, to be conferred during graduation ceremonies at Lincoln Cathedral in July.

This year’s awardees reflect the University’s commitment to lifelong learning, recognising individuals whose leadership, creativity and service are transforming lives, strengthening communities, and shaping a more inclusive and compassionate society.

A leading expert in special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), a charity chief executive, and a BAFTA-winning actor will receive Honorary Doctorates, alongside an Honorary Fellowship awarded for exceptional service to the University.

Gary Aubin, a nationally recognised author, educator and advocate for SEND, is among those to be honoured. As author of The Lone SENDCO and The Parent’s Guide to SEND, and Director of SEND Programmes and Networks at Whole Education, Gary has been instrumental in shaping inclusive practice across the UK. His work on national policy, including contributions to the UK Government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review and advisory work with the BBC, has helped to ensure that more learners are supported to flourish and fulfil their potential.

Valerie Waby, Chief Executive of Linkage Community Trust, will also receive an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of her longstanding commitment to social justice and opportunity. A Chartered Accountant with more than three decades of leadership across education, health, housing and community development, Valerie has dedicated her career to enabling people with learning disabilities and autism to lead independent, meaningful lives. Under her leadership, Linkage has expanded specialist education and employment pathways, creating life-changing opportunities across Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

Actor Jason Watkins will receive an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts and cultural life. A BAFTA Award-winning actor, Jason is widely acclaimed for his compelling performances in The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies and The Crown, alongside an extensive and distinguished body of work across theatre, television and film. Highly respected on both stage and screen, Jason’s career exemplifies the power of storytelling to deepen understanding, foster empathy and connect people across diverse experiences.

The University will also award an Honorary Fellowship to Dr Stephen Critchley in recognition of his longstanding contribution to the governance and development of Lincoln Bishop University. A member of the University Council for eight years, including service as Chair of the Audit Committee and Senior Independent Governor, Stephen has played a vital role in strengthening institutional stewardship. His wider career includes senior leadership as Chief Financial Officer at Transport for London and significant contributions to the voluntary sector.

Professor Andrew Gower, Vice-Chancellor of Lincoln Bishop University, said:
“Graduation is a moment to celebrate achievement but also purpose, and the difference our graduates will go on to make in the world.

“Our Honorary Awardees exemplify what it means to use knowledge, talent and leadership in service of others. Through education, advocacy, creativity and public service, each of them has helped to create opportunities for people to thrive in their learning, their work, and their lives.

“They reflect the kind of impact we seek to nurture in our students and graduates: grounded in values, outward-looking, and committed to the common good. We are proud to welcome the 2026 Honorary Awardees into our University community.”

The awards will be presented during graduation ceremonies on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 July at Lincoln Cathedral. Recipients were nominated by students, staff and members of University Council.
