On Friday 19th June, Lincoln Bishop University were proud to host the 10th East Midlands Annual Human Scale Education Conference, in collaboration with the education movement charity, Human Scale Education (HSE).

The event is designed to provide teachers, school leaders, and education professionals with a valuable opportunity to hear from, be challenged by, and be inspired by leading voices in education.

With speakers including experienced teachers, heads of department, education consultants and a school inspector, attendees were invited to a variety of workshops to take part in educational debates about schools, wellbeing, social justice and democracy.

Dr Joseph Arhavbarien, a teacher, Lincoln Bishop alumni and speaker at the conference, said: “I believe events like these are very important, as they bring education back into focus. We want education professionals to understand how educational needs can be appropriately addressed.

“The conference provides new teachers with the opportunity to understand what the challenges are and how they can influence and drive change when they go into the school system and start working as teachers.”

During the conference, Lincoln Bishop University and Human Scale Education signed a Memorandum of Understanding, to form a partnership that is expected to have significant impact on education. University colleagues including Lincoln Bishop’s Vice Chancellor Professor Andrew Gower, conference speakers and some of the University’s PGCE students attended the signing.

Dr Helen Bushell-Thornalley, Senior lecturer in Doctoral, Masters and PGCE programmes, commented: “I think the tenth anniversary of the conference showcases that Lincoln Bishop and Human Scale Education have not only come together over those years, but we've learned a lot and we've been inspired by one another.

“We have PGCE students that experience the conference and then become members of Human Scale Education – who then go on to become published and very passionate. Offering teachers, and trainee teachers the opportunity to be a delegate in a conference at the end of their teaching year is a unique prospect.”

Lincoln Bishop University has a long-standing history spanning 164 years of serving society through education. This enduring commitment reflects its vision of helping to build a better future, rich with opportunity and possibility – certified by multiple accolades including 1st in the UK for Teaching (National Student Survey 2025).

Human Scale Education is an education movement committed to small scale learning communities based on the values of democracy, justice and respect. HSE works directly with schools and parents to promote human scale learning environments where children and young people are known and valued as individuals.

The partnership between the two organisations has grown over the last ten years of hosting the conference and is based on the shared values of both partners, including respect for self and others, democracy, social justice and fairness and sustainability.
