Royal Visit to Mark Opening of Landmark Building at BGU
HRH the Duke of Gloucester will visit Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln next week to officially open the university’s latest new building. The £2.2 million extension to Constance Stewart Hall, which has created a new landmark building at the junction of Newport and Longdales Road, will be opened on Thursday 6thJuly. The works have doubled the size of the teaching block and involved building a steel-framed structure on top of part of the original building to give the university an additional seven teaching spaces set over two floors. This approach of building over an existing structure means that BGU will significantly increase its teaching space capacity without increasing the building’s overall footprint, which helps to maintain the green and open feel of the campus. During his visit to Lincoln on 6th July the Duke of Gloucester will also officially open the Battles and Dynasties Exhibition at The Collection. At BGU he will be introduced to dignitaries including the Bishop of Lincoln, the Right Reverend Christopher Lowson; the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Chris Burke; Lincoln’s MP Karen Lee; the Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University, the Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil; and the university’s Chancellor, Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas. On a tour of the campus the Duke will visit the university’s business centre BG Futures, the Victorian chapel and the new Centre for Enhancement in Learning and Teaching which opened in March. He will then officially open the new extension at Constance Stewart Hall by unveiling a plaque at approximately 2.45pm. A bold statement “This iconic addition to our estate really makes a bold statement in uphill Lincoln that BGU is an outward-facing institution,” said the Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University. “It’s further evidence of our ongoing commitment to invest in our teaching resources to ensure our students continue to have an outstanding experience.” Steve Deville, Director of Resources at BGU, said: “This fantastic new building reinforces BGU’s commitment to invest in our students and their learning experience. “This building is to be opened just a few months after our new Centre for Enhancement in Learning and Teaching facility and will provide students with flexible teaching spaces and state-of-the-art facilities to aid their learning.” The new teaching spaces will incorporate moveable partition walls, increasing their flexibility, meaning that they can be used not only for teaching but also for a variety of functions and events. Delivered by Lincoln-based architects LK2 and local construction company Robert Woodhead Ltd, the project was carried out in two phases and saw a 7,770 square foot extension added to the Constance Stewart Hall to accommodate new teaching space. The extension is supported by an impressive steel framework made from locally sourced steel and erected by Robert Woodhead Ltd. Throughout the project, contractors pledged to use local resources wherever possible. The project was procured through the empa framework which is managed by Scape Group. The development of the new building on campus was an opportunity to enhance the graduate attributes of BGU students, who were able to gain valuable work experience on the project with Robert Woodhead Ltd. -

Celebrating a Year of Improving Access to Higher Education
A scheme which aims to double the proportion of disadvantaged young people going to university will celebrate its achievements so far at an event in Woodhall Spa this week. LiNCHigher is led in Lincolnshire by Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) and is part of a wider national initiative (NCOP) funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to raise aspirations amongst young people. The overall aim is to meet government targets to improve access to higher education and the scheme will run for two years until December 2018, and possibly beyond. Around 50 guests are expected to attend the celebration at Woodhall Spa Manor on Wednesday 1st November, including the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Chris Burke and Professor Jayne Mitchell, Deputy Vice Chancellor of BGU. Since its formation in January 2017 the project team, consortium partners and delivery partners have worked to change attitudes towards higher education, improve knowledge of the options available to young people and raise aspirations within communities. “LiNCHigher is committed to offering information, advice and guidance for the young people of Lincolnshire and promoting local opportunities for their futures,” said Project Officer Natalie Poole. “We hope to inspire a new generation of students to grow and realise their aspirations while studying in or outside of Lincolnshire. “Our celebration event will bring together key stakeholders to encourage discussions around skills needs, higher education and Lincolnshire’s business community.” BGU's Professor Jayne Mitchell added: “The LiNCHigher project has made significant progress in engaging with young people, parents and teachers across Lincolnshire. As the success of the project gathers speed, support from partners and the wider community will prove ever more critical. “This celebration event will showcase our successes so far, introduce new stakeholders to the project and discuss plans for the future. It should be a fabulous event and I’m looking forward to welcoming our guests as Chair of the LiNCHigher Governance Board.” -

#12DaysofBGU Day 7: Top 3 in the UK
We announced this year that BGU is ranked third among UK universities for student employability, according to figures published in July. 97.2% per cent of students who leave BGU with an undergraduate degree find work or are continuing to study six months following graduation. Only two other universities – Keele and Harper Adams – have a higher employability figure than Bishop Grosseteste University. The figures relate to full-time first degree graduates leaving in 2014/15 and the national average for all UK universities is 93.9%. The statistics appear in the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey published by HESA, the Higher Education Statistics Agency. “Once again the DLHE survey highlights how well our graduates do when they enter the job market,” said the Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University. “It’s very heartening to see BGU right near the top of the national ranking as it shows that we are doing everything we can to prepare for our students for the workplace when they leave us. “We work very hard to ensure that our degree courses are career-focused and most of them incorporate a professional work placement during the period of study. “One example is our new Business (Team Entrepreneurship) degree which requires students to set up their own business while studying with us.” The latest DLHE figures can be found by clicking here. #12DaysofBGU Day 6: Matriculation
Students were formally welcomed to Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in Lincoln at a Matriculation Ceremony in October at Lincoln Cathedral. The welcoming ceremony was established two years ago and has now become an annual event. The ceremony gives both undergraduate and postgraduate students the chance to meet University staff and each other. All newly enrolled students were invited. The University’s Vice Chancellor, the Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, explained: “Matriculation is the term used to describe students’ formal entry into the university. We hope this ceremony serves as a friendly welcome to all those who are starting their studies and that students feel they are becoming a part of the wider university family.” The ceremony was held in Lincoln Cathedral on Monday 9 October at 3.30pm. For most students this will also be the place of their graduation, thanks to the University’s links with the Diocese of Lincoln. An academic procession took place, including members of BGU’s academic staff, University Council and officers of the University making a grand entrance. Distinguished county and civic guests were also invited to attend. The Precentor of Lincoln welcomed students to the cathedral before the Registrar endorsed the pre-signed Matricula roll. Students were then invited by the Vice Chancellor to ‘share the hand of friendship’ and shake hands with each other to admit them all formally as members of the University. BGU signs memorandum of understanding with Thai university
The Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in Lincoln, the Revd. Canon Professor Peter Neil, signed an agreement with a university in Bangkok today. Professor Neil signed and exchanged a memorandum of understanding with Dr Preang Kitratporn of Phranakhon Rajabhat University in Bangkok. Both leaders talked about the growing relationship between the two institutions and the opportunities ahead for cooperation. The initial focus will be on teacher education and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Professor Neil said, “We are extremely pleased to be able to formally strengthen our relationship with Phranakhon Rajabhat University. “Bishop Grosseteste University is committed to developing its staff and students as global citizens. This partnership will benefit our staff and students and we look forward to building on the partnership in the future.” Phranakhon Rajabhat University was founded in the 19th century as a teaching training institute and now offers programmes across a range of academic and professional programmes. Professor Neil will also be meeting representatives from the Thai Teaching Council, the President of the Rajabhat Universities Council, representatives of the British Embassy in Bangkok and a number of Rajabhat University Presidents as part of a one week visit to Thailand. BGU welcomes Dr Rob Boast as its new Executive Dean
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in Lincoln has appointed Dr Rob Boast as Executive Dean Learning, Teaching and Student Engagement. Dr Boast joins the senior management team at BGU from Staffordshire University, where he was most recently Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching. Rob takes up his new role from Monday 13th November and will immediately be focussing on supporting academic staff to deliver inspirational teaching, an excellent student learning experience and meaningful student engagement. A highly experienced academic who has been leading teaching and learning development at Staffordshire University for a number of years, Dr Boast is recognised as an innovator in higher education practice. He has a particular specialism in problem-based learning and practical scholarship, personalised learner support and innovative course development across a range of disciplines. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he has also championed the introduction of technology-enhanced learning and creation of new employer engagement and student employability opportunities. Professor Jayne Mitchell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at BGU, said: “We are delighted to welcome Rob to BGU. He brings a wealth of experience and an outstanding academic background as a researcher, educator and innovator. “Perhaps most importantly, he also shares our ambition to sustain and further develop excellent teaching and student outcomes for all.” Dr Boast said: “I am delighted to be joining Bishop Grosseteste University with its strong personalised and community approach to learning. “I am excited about working with colleagues and students to enhance learning and teaching and the student experience.” -

BGU Lecturers Return to Thailand to Aid Education Reform
Academics from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) are returning to Thailand on Friday to continue their overseas consultancy with the Thai government on improving teacher development. Professor Chris Atkin and Dr Nick Gee, Head of School of Teacher Development, will be participating in a workshop hosted by the British Embassy in Bangkok to build on recommendations for initial teacher training first presented to Thai government in August 2016. Other participants include representatives from the University of Ulster, the University of Leicester and the University of Aberdeen. Supported by the Thai Minister for Education (who championed BGU’s original recommendations) and the UK Foreign Office the event will cover a number of training ideas to aid teachers in understanding the impact of their work on students and communities. It will also mark the launch of a new competency framework for teachers in South East Asia. In addition to launching the framework the workshop will offer an updated review of initial teacher training in Thailand and look to encourage further opportunities for collaboration between BGU and the Thai Education Sector. Having led the original review in 2016 Professor Atkin is delighted to see the project is having such a positive impact: “The success of the initial review has placed BGU at the heart of educational policy reform in Thailand. It is a distinct honour to have our experience and expertise as providers of teacher training so emphatically recognised by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and Thai government. “It is a responsibility we do not take lightly. At the heart of successful education are highly trained teachers. We look forward to continuing our part in supporting trainee and experience teachers across Thailand.” Supporting educational reform in Thailand is just one part of BGU’s activities in South East Asia. Following the initial review in 2016 BGU Vice Chancellor, Revd. Canon Professor Peter Neil, visited Thailand last December. During the visit he exchanged a memorandum of understanding with Phranakhon Rajabhat University in Bangkok and met with members of the Teachers’ Council of Thailand as well as colleagues from the country’s 38 Rajabhat universities. Dr Emma Pearson, Senior Lecturer in Education Studies at BGU, is also leading on a number of research projects focussed on the development of early childhood provision in South East Asian with a number of regional partners. In addition Professor Atkin will travel to Hong Kong in March in his role as an external examiner at the University of Hong Kong and in May as the external discipline expert on a Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualification (HKCAAVQ) reaccreditation of a BA in Social Sciences. BGU welcomes Professor Scott Fleming as its new Executive Dean
Professor Scott Fleming will join the senior management team at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) from Cardiff Metropolitan University, where he is currently Director of Research and Graduate Studies. Scott takes up his new role as Executive Dean Research, Knowledge Exchange and External Engagement from 1 April 2018. He will immediately be focussing on growing BGU’s research capability and capacity, and steering the development of BGU’s Lincolnshire Open Research and Innovation Centre (LORIC) Professor Fleming is a highly experienced academic who is recognised for his development and leadership of research governance and knowledge exchange at Cardiff Met over a number of years. His personal research interest is primarily in the sociology of sport and leisure, and in addition to his own track record of publication, he brings a wealth of experience in cross-University researcher training, staff development and support for Graduate Studies. Professor Jayne Mitchell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln, said: “We are delighted to welcome Scott to BGU. He brings a wealth of experience and an outstanding academic background as a researcher, educator and innovator. Perhaps most importantly, he also shares our ambition to sustain and further develop research, knowledge exchange and external engagement at BGU.” Professor Fleming said: “I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to take forward BGU’s ambitious plans for development of this portfolio.
