GREAT Scholarships 2022/23 – East Asia
In partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, Lincoln Bishop University is offering 2 scholarships to students in Thailand and Malaysia, applying for postgraduate study at Lincoln Bishop*. The GREAT Scholarships 2022/23 programme, launched by the British Council together with 41 UK universities, supports postgraduate students from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand to access world-class UK higher education opportunities. The scholarship programme offers financial support of a minimum of £10,000 to students pursuing one-year postgraduate study in the UK. Students can apply for courses in a range of subjects, at the 41 institutions across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The number of GREAT Scholarships available for each country is : Thailand – 1Malaysia – 1 The deadline for applications is 31st March 2023 *Please note Teaching Training programmes are not included in these scholarships. -

BGU English to Plot New Worlds in Celebration of the Humanities
The English team at Lincoln Bishop University are celebrating the Humanities this November as part of the Being Human 2020 festival. Being Human is the UK’s national festival of the humanities led by the School of Advanced Study (University of London) in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. As part of their contribution to the festival’s theme, ‘New Worlds’, the team are sharing the passion for the outdoors and literature of the environment of our staff and students with two virtual events: Plotting Outdoor Worlds Café on Friday 20th November 2020, 10:00am - 11.30am Plotting New Worlds Outdoors on Tuesday 24 November 10:00 - 12.00pm -
Free Archaeology Talks to Explore the Lives of American Airmen during the Second World War
Lincoln Bishop University (Lincoln Bishop), in collaboration with the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum, are hosting a series of free talks on the United States Army Air Force during the Second World War. These talks form part of a larger project led by Dr Derwin Gregory, Programme Leader for Archaeology and Heritage at Lincoln Bishop, on the history and archaeology of the USAAF. The talks are free and open to the public, but registration is essential. 28 November – ‘The Archaeology of the Friendly Invasion’ 5 December – ‘We Have Come Home’: Pilgrimage, repatriation, and collective memory at the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum, Thorpe Abbotts 12 December – ‘”They Treated Us Royally?”: The Experiences of Black Americans supporting the air war in Britain’ If you’re interested in studying Archaeology you can find out more about our courses on our website or through one of our virtual open events. The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum has been dedicated for more than 40 years to preserving the stories and memories of the American involvement in World War Two based at Thorpe Abbotts, Norfolk. Housed in the original airfield control tower and surrounding atmospheric buildings the museum displays offer a moving testament to the Americans who came to a sleepy village in Norfolk to fight alongside the allies during World War Two. 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum is entirely run by volunteers and is usually open from the beginning of March until the end of October each year. Entry to the museum is free and the organisation relies heavily on donations from visitors and sales in the gift shop. Due to the coronavirus pandemic the museum was unable to open this year. Update on planned return to learning in January and Lateral Flow Testing
The Government’s guidance is that the return to face-to-face sessions should be staggered over a 4-5 week period, with priority given to practical or placement based subjects, to help prevent the possible transmission of COVID-19 following the Christmas vacation period. In addition, Lateral Flow Tests will again be made available to students and staff in this period to help reassure that they are not returning with the virus. For Lincoln Bishop this means that most programmes will continue to be delivered via remote learning for the first two weeks in January (beginning the 4th and 11th) to complete semester 1. This includes the planned assessment week beginning the 18th which does not require in-person classes. A return to blended learning, including face-to-face sessions will for many subjects begin from the 25th of January with the start of semester 2. However, to facilitate the staggered return some subject sessions, as previously timetabled, will not start until the 1st of February. Certain subjects are exceptions and will return to placements and in-person activities earlier. These include: Programmes with ITE placements starting from 4th JanuarySome in-person sessions for Drama level 4 and Level 5 students For specific information relating to individual programmes, Joint honours student should check the information for both their subjects as they may start back at different times. Additional information will also be supplied by tutors through Blackboard for students on exception courses needing to return earlier or later than the 25th January. To help keep the return to learning a smooth process we will again be offering free lateral flow testing to all students and staff. As with the end of term testing this a voluntary process but we would encourage all members of our community to make use of it in the build-up to your programme’s return to blended learning. BGU Graduate’s Café Project to Offer a Future to Young People in Skegness
At the start of the year the impact of the pandemic on the education of children in Skegness was featured by Sky News*. Enterprise Development Manager, Sarah Moseley, chatted with Ruth Campbell, who graduated from Lincoln Bishop University in 2020, as she embarks on a new venture to support young people in the area. The project, Café YOU (You Opportunity Union), aims to support young people who might have missed other opportunities to grow their skills as Ruth explains: “I have a background of working with young people and have always been passionate about youth work and concerned about those who fall through the gaps and miss opportunities to grow and develop. Whilst I was at Lincoln Bishop I started working on an idea for a youth project which I called Youth Opportunity Union (YOU). The vision is to support NEET young people aged 16-19 to get back on track, through short courses and work experience.” After highlighting a suitable premises, the BA (Hons) Professional Studies in Childhood and Youth graduate completed a business proposal and, following a successful pitch to the board of the Charity at The Storehouse, North Parade in Skegness, Ruth took over management of a coffee shop at the end of 2020. Lockdowns and restrictions have inevitably slowed progress, but the base will enable the delivery of vocational education and work experience along with the provision of courses, qualifications and a small group environment for learning. Ruth has registered with the awarding body ASDAN, so young people who access the project are able to work towards qualifications whilst gaining work experience. Ruth’s vision, COVID-19 and restrictions permitting, is for the project to grow, for Café YOU to be fully run by young people, and to be able to welcome customers back in: “I want the community to use this space to their advantage. We can arrange a safe space for 1:1 work for professionals; tables can be booked, and we have allocated space for groups to meet. There is even a soft play area for little ones to enjoy. Currently we could be operating as a Takeaway but the Storehouse has recently become a Covid-19 vaccination Centre.” When asked what advice she has for students and graduates wanting to start their own enterprise, Ruth had this to say: “Start small! I am so passionate about what I want to do that I can get carried away and take on too much. I have learned to work realistically within my own capabilities even if it’s frustrating at times! To accept help and advice. There is usually more than one way to achieve what you need to, and it is always worth listening to people who might know more than you do. Stay true to your vision. The clearer you are about your ultimate vision, the end goal, the easier it is to stick with, and for it to make sense to other people. Believe in it yourself and your confidence will attract others to your idea. It can be hard not to get swept along with other people’s ideas for your business/project, but when your vision is clear it makes it easier not to get side-tracked “.
