BGU Goes Global as Conference Celebrates Internationalism
Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln celebrated the breadth of its international activity by staging a BG Global conference on campus yesterday (22nd April). The keynote speaker was Vivienne Stern, Director of the UK Higher Education International Unit, who spoke about issues affecting the higher education sector in internationalisation and attracting international students to the UK. The conference also provided an opportunity for BGU to launch its Internationalisation Strategy, which has been developed by the university’s new International Manager Wayne Dyble and a group of colleagues from across the institution. Dr Ruth Sayers, Executive Dean for Learning Teaching and International at BGU, welcomed the delegates, some of whom were the university’s students. She described the range of activities represented at the conference as impressive, including presentations on international research activity, mobility programmes overseas, institutional partnerships and special projects. BGU has a long history of working with partners in many international settings, including China, Nepal, Thailand, the Gambia, Norway, Uganda, Brazil, Tanzania and India. The conference also offered academic staff an opportunity to discuss how they are internationalising the curricula in innovative ways, supported by a project led by the Higher Education Academy. “The conference represents a sea change in our international work,” said Dr Sayers. “We celebrate the many activities that have gone before, but we look forward to a much more strategic future, in which internationalisation will permeate all our activities and the new International Office will drive forward the strategy that was launched at the conference.” -

Education Talk to Mark International Women's Day
Education expert Dame Sally Coates will give a talk at Bishop Grosseteste University on Monday (7th March) to mark International Women’s Day. BGU and the Lincolnshire branch of the English Speaking Union will host a talk entitled Educating for the Future in the Hardy Building at 6.30pm. Dame Sally Coates has always worked in inner city schools in London and has been in teaching since 1976. She started work as an English teacher in Peckham Girls’ School, now The Academy at Peckham. She was Principal of Burlington Danes Academy, an 11–18 Ark Academy in Hammersmith and Fulham, from 2008 to 2014. The school was graded outstanding by Ofsted in November 2013. She acted as Executive Principal at Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton until July 2012 and was Executive Principal of Ark Putney and West London Free School until July 2014. Dame Sally chaired the Review of the Teaching Standards and the Skills Test Review. She also served as a member of the Key Stage 2 Test Review Committee under the chairmanship of Lord Bew. In September 2014 she joined United Learning as Director of Academies South. She is currently chairing a review into Prison Education. The Coates Review will report its findings to the Secretary of State for Justice in early in 2016. She was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2013 New Years Honours List. Her book – Headstrong: 11 Lessons of School Leadership – was published in February 2015 and will be available for sale and signing after her talk. BGU Students Forge International Connections in Finland
A delegation of Business (Team Entrepreneurship) students from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) travelled to Finland last month to meet with fellow entrepreneurs from across the globe. Members of Kinetic BGU Ltd., the company run by BGU students as part of their course, began their visit with a two day workshop in Tampere with Proakatemia, a local Team Academy. In addition to presenting their projects to each other the two teams shared business advice and solutions before examining the potential for joint ventures in the future. As a result one such venture has already been put in motion and BGU student Max Bouer will begin working alongside members of Proakatemia to organise international events for students in the coming months. Following the workshop the trip culminated in a ‘Team 4 Learning’ event, which celebrated 25 year of the Team Academy Initiative. Held in the city of Jyvaskyla, the birth place of the Team Academy Initiative, the event offered an opportunity for international networking with team academies from across the globe in attendance. Beth Tidswell, Director of Kinetic BGU, heralded the trip as an immense success: “Our time in Finland was an amazing experience that is already having a positive impact on our work here at BGU. Not only did we get to surround ourselves with new ideas and information, we’ve also been asked to consult with teams in Germany who are looking to set up their own programmes like ours.” Since becoming a part of the BGU degree portfolio, the Business (Team Entrepreneurship) course has become well regarded and BGU are delighted to have been asked to host the next international Team 4 Learning meeting in 2019. Examining ‘Criminal Anthropology’ on the International Stage
Over the weekend Robert von Friedeburg, Reader in History at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) contributed to the 'The Discourse of British and German Colonialism: Convergence and Competition' international conference at Queen Mary University. Robert's paper focused on 'Criminal Anthropology', a discipline fashionable during the 1870s to 1920s in Europe and the US. However, while fashionable, it was by no means a discipline lead by a single school of thought. While German contributions developed wider ideas of biological races among mankind British contributions did not. Indeed, at the eve of the First World War, the German scene had become accustomed to outright racist arguments, whilst the British one, while using the term 'race', had not. Robert's contribution addressed this strong divergence between British and German discourse and he praised the intellectual and scholastic opportunities his presence at the conference offered: “The conference went very well; the cooperation among historians, and literary scholars and linguists was particularly invigorating. I think that this opportunity for international cooperation is really one of the most interesting aspects of the conference particularly given how fruitful our shared comparisons have proven to be. It puts the results of our individual findings in a more informed perspective” Robert’s paper, along with those of his fellow presenters, will be published later this year by Routledge. Academics Explore Research Partnerships with International Visitors
Academics from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) welcomed Kerem and Meral Coşkun from Artvin Çoruh University in Turkey to explore and discuss potential collaborative research opportunities. Their planned research is based on the social, emotional and moral development of young children and has developed from a collaborative article ‘Is it possible to teach values without social psychology?’ (International Journal of Progressive Education, 14 (6). pp. 38-50. ISSN 1554-5210) written by BGU’s Dr Pat Beckley and academics from Artvin Çoruh. Dr Beckley discussed the new research and how it would build on the existing work carried out by the collaborative group: “The research builds on previous comparative studies the group have undertaken and focuses on differences and similarities between perceptions of social, emotional and moral development in selected primary school sites in England and Turkey. It is proposed to broaden those participating in the studies in both countries. It is an exciting opportunity for BGU as it creates a dynamic collaboration between two similar sized universities which have teacher training as a fundamental element of their work.” If you’re interested in a future in Early Years provision or Teaching there are few institutions that can provide a better experience than BGU. Academics complete international project exploring personalised learning
Academics from the School of Teacher Development at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) have completed work on an Erasmus+ project this month, attending the final meeting in The Netherlands to showcase their output. The Erasmus+ project, on Personalised Learning in Primary and Secondary education phases, included research teams from The Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Finland and the BGU UK team. The academics involved from the School of Teacher Development were; Dr. Emma Clarke, Kevin McLaughlin, Shaun Thompson, Dr. Jonathan Wainwright and Aimee Quickfall. The BGU team joined the project in January this year, taking over from a school partner in Lincoln, and quickly became part of a strong research group across Europe during visits to The Netherlands and Sweden in the spring. Their output is the 'teacher profile' - a tool for teachers across Europe to assess their own level of personalised learning practice, with advice and targets if they wish to increase their level of skill in this area as Dr Clarke explained: “The toolkit is deliberately non-judgemental, for teachers to use individually or with peers. It avoids suggesting that some teaching approaches are better than others - but will support practitioners who wish to develop key personalised learning skills.” As part of the final project meeting, the Erasmus+ team presented to teachers and leaders in The Netherlands. Returning from the meeting Aimee commented: “It has been a pleasure to be involved in this European project, with researchers who have different backgrounds, settings and perspectives, but who share a passion for improving education and professional development for teachers. We have built relationships with our partner teams and hope we can continue to develop our links and projects.” The completed project will 'go live' in the autumn of 2019.
