    Our English Language and Teaching programme immerses you in the fascinating study of English, from how it developed from humble origins to the global language with all its variations that we use today, to how it is learned by children as a first language or by learners of English as a second or further language - and much more. You will explore questions about language structures and language use in society, language disorders, and language acquisition and you will learn practical methods - and get hands-on experience - of how to teach it. Crucially, you will develop skills and knowledge to help you gain employment or pursue further studies for work or research in linguistics, education, and language teaching, and a range of other relevant fields.
  2. 142. Dr Lianxin (Megan) Li
    Dr. Megan Li is a Lecturer in English Language and Teaching with a strong interdisciplinary background in language education and applied linguistics. Her affiliation with Lincoln Bishop University (Lincoln Bishop) began in 2021 as a guest speaker, where she delivered sessions on research methodology to MA students. From 2021 to 2024, she served as an Associate Lecturer in English Language and Teaching, contributing to both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. She has taught across the BA English Language and Teaching and the MA Education with TESOL programmes, with a focus on modules such as First Language Acquisition, Second Language Acquisition, English for Academic Purposes, the psychology of language learning and TESOL in Practice. In addition, she was also appointed as a dissertation supervisor and assessment feedback coordinator for the MA Education programme in 2024 at the University of Sheffield.Dr. Li holds a BA in English Education Studies from China and completed her MA in TESOL with Education at Lincoln Bishop in 2019. She was awarded her PhD in 2025 by the University of Leicester. Her doctoral research examined learner motivation and psychological needs satisfaction in the context of learning languages other than English (LOTE) in Chinese universities, drawing on Self-Determination Theory as a central theoretical framework.Her research interests lie in LOTE teaching and learning, motivation in language education, individual differences in language learning, positive psychology in second language acquisition, and English for Academic Purposes. She is particularly interested in how psychological and cognitive factors influence motivation in language learning in diverse educational contexts.
  3. 143. Six Professorial Titles Awarded to BGU Academics
    Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has announced six new professorial titles to be conferred upon members of its academic staff. Among these titles are two Associate Professors and four Professors spanning various disciplines. Professorial titles are awarded to recognise individuals who have demonstrated outstanding expertise, acknowledging the recipient's impact on research, teaching, and the broader academic community. The recipients and their respective titles are as follows: Dr Clare Lawrence – Formerly holding the position of Senior Lecturer - Secondary, Dr Lawrence's title is now Associate Professor of Participatory Autism Research/Senior Lecturer - Secondary. Dr Derwin Gregory – Previously Programme Leader - Archaeology and Heritage, Dr Gregory now assumes the role of Associate Professor of Conflict Archaeology/Programme Leader - Archaeology and Heritage. Dr Andrew Jackson – Formerly recognised as Head of Research/Associate Professor in Local, Regional and Public History, Dr Jackson now holds the title of Professor - Local, Regional, and Landscape History/Head of Research. Dr Claudia Capancioni– Previously Reader - English Literature/Programme Leader - English, Dr Capancioni is now Professor of English Literature/ Programme Leader - English. Dr Caroline Horton – Formerly Reader - Psychology, Dr Horton's title is now Professor of Sleep and Cognition. Dr Jack Cunningham – Previously titled Associate Professor in Ecclesiastical History/Programme Leader Theology, Dr Cunningham now assumes the role of Professor of Ecclesiastical History/Programme Leader Theology. Reflecting, Professor Jack Cunningham said: "This Professorship in Ecclesiastical History is a great honour and the pinnacle of my academic career that has stretched over twenty years. It was earned through days of study in cold cathedral libraries in the winter, suffocating Vatican archives in the summer, and long nights in book collections all over the world. "BGU's fantastic support and encouragement along the way has made that journey not only possible but highly enjoyable." This milestone signifies the establishment of a professoriate at BGU for the first time, aimed at enhancing the research culture and environment, fostering academic leadership, and providing a supportive structure for career development within the university community. The creation of the professoriate aligns with BGU's overarching goals of promoting interdisciplinary research, and elevating research priorities within the institution. Vice-Chancellor Professor Karen Stanton said: "We are thrilled to announce these well-deserved professorial titles, which mark a significant achievement for our university and the academic community. This recognition not only highlights the exceptional expertise and dedication of our staff but also underscores our commitment to fostering a vibrant research culture at BGU.   5. 145. Dr Lucinda Newns
    Senior Lecturer in English Lucinda Newns is a Senior Lecturer in English specialising in postcolonial and environmental literature. She joined Lincoln Bishop in 2023 after previous positions at King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London and the University of Manchester. She has also held a research fellowship at the Education University of Hong Kong (2020-2021). She was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship to complete her PhD at London Metropolitan University and holds an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) and a BA from New York University. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

    Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) graduate Daniel Swift is once again making waves in the world of theatre! This time, taking a production aimed at people labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) to the West End and is the very first of its kind. In 2019, he founded Concrete Youth, a theatre company for the purpose of creating more accessible shows and events. 'I am thrilled to share some exciting news with you; we will soon be announcing that our next production will run in the West End this autumn. This marks a significant milestone as it will be the first West End production specifically designed for audiences labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). I loved my time at the university. It was transformational for my practice and introduced me to the world of inclusive arts and education. The educators in the Drama department were exceptional and continue to support my work years later.' Daniel Swift Sensory Cinders is a new sensory pantomime adaptation of Cinderella for audiences labelled with PMLD, featuring original music that explores themes of identity, self-expression, transformation, magic, personas, authenticity, and connectedness. What does it mean to pursue self-love and understanding in a world that doesn’t understand you? This marks the first West End show and the first inclusive sensory pantomime specifically designed for audiences such as this. The production features specially designed sensory materials by Henshaws Arts & Crafts, a Yorkshire-based collective supporting local learning-disabled visual artists. The show marks all the artists’ professional theatre debuts. Sensory Cinders is a co-production from the multi-award-winning sensory theatre company Concrete Youth and the nationally recognised venue Barnsley Civic. The production is presented in partnership with @sohoplace and Henshaws Arts Centre. The show is supported by Sheffield Theatres and Arts Council England. and the production's development was supported by the National Theatre's Generate programme.   8. 148. 'Let's Play' event held at BGU
    The Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion (SENDI) team at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is delighted to have welcomed Neil Stuart from Autism New Zealand, who joined us for the day to share the Let’s Play approach. This adult-change programme enables parents and early years practitioners to offer joyous and quality experiences of play from the child’s own patterns, making it possible for young children with autism to enjoy playing with their parents and carers without uncertainty or fear.'Fantastic and engaging presentation. Thoroughly enjoyed listening & hopefully putting some strategies into practice.' Bev Clark (Parent/ PAACT) Over a hundred attendees from across Lincolnshire and surrounding counties gathered on Thursday 20th June at BGU, to join in this one-off opportunity to learn more about New Zealand’s national early steps programme. The mixed audience of parents, practitioners, students, academics, and other professionals had opportunities to gain new understanding and reflect on their own approaches, learning to relate and connect through playfulness in ways meaningful for the child. The day’s free training was highly entertaining and drew on ingenious metaphors to raise empathy and to demonstrate the importance of change in the adult rather than the child. Complete with evidence base, video coaching and the simplicity of ‘pattern, memory, variation’, this approach got everybody thinking.'This is the second time I have visited Bishop Grosseteste University to see Neil and he has not disappointed on either occasion. His character, passion and knowledge about the subject of play, in particular engaging autistic children in play, is captivating. I would thoroughly recommend. Each time I left feeling a renewed energy to pass on the little gems of wisdom we learned to the team back in our setting.'     Dr Judith Naseby has more than 25 years’ experience in senior academic leadership in higher education, within the areas of Psychology, Sport, and Health. Prior to joining Lincoln Bishop University, she spent twelve years as Head of Sport, Health and Exercise at the University of Hertfordshire.She studied for a BSc (Hons) in Psychology at the University of Aberdeen, a Masters in Sport Science at Loughborough University and a PhD in Sport Psychology at Liverpool JMU.Alongside her academic career, Judith has over 30 years’ consultancy experience in sport, working with athletes, coaches, and governing bodies from grassroots through to elite level. She has worked with numerous elite athletes and coaches, including Olympic, World, and Commonwealth medal winning track and field athletes and coaches, several premier level sports teams, international and Olympic swimming medallists and coaches, and elite tennis players competing at numerous tour events including Wimbledon.Her research interests centre around two main areas: stress, anxiety and performance, and positive psychology and wellbeing. She is particularly interested in how individuals manage stress and anxiety, whether they are elite athletes striving for gold medals or people managing the pressures of everyday life, including students. Her positive psychology work explores happiness, wellbeing, and how individuals can be supported to thrive rather than simply survive.
