Susan Graham
Sue has significant experience as a senior leader in a sixth form college and has been part of the PGCE secondary team at Lincoln Bishop University since September 2019, focusing on training new business and social science teachers (key stage 4 and 5). Sue trained as a Business Studies Teacher in 1990, her teaching began in Leicester and her career evolved from classroom teacher to head of department, business and social science divisional head and then to assistant principal at a college in Grimsby. Sue is passionate about education and training, coaching and mentoring new teachers and supporting them into their ECT induction, beyond ITE. -
Tara May
Tara teaches on the FdA and BA (Hons) (top up) Applied Studies across all pathways (Learning Support, Early Childhood and Children and Youth). She joined Bishop Grosseteste in 2012 as a Visiting Tutor working on the FdA and BA (top up) Applied Studies, undergraduate Early Childhood Studies, Education Studies and SENI programmes before taking up a full time position in 2015. Prior to this Tara worked as the Assessment Manager for an Early Years Professional Status provider and a Programme Leader of a FdEd and BA (Hons) (top up) Early Childhood Studies within another Higher Education institution. Teaching Tara teaches on the Foundation and Honours degrees in Applied Studies across all of three pathways. Her teaching interests include the individual in society, inclusion and professional practice in early years. Tara also has a particular interest in the role of early years professionals and the implementation and development of the Early Years Teacher Status. -
Thomasin Nicholds
Thomasin is the Head of Programmes; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Associate Dean; International. Having spent a large proportion of her career in the Third Sector, responsible for the strategic development and running of a wide range of services for children, families and communities. These include organisational development programmes for other businesses, community research, Ofsted regulated Further Education, health and wellbeing programmes. In this context she has worked at a national level developing and informing policy, engaging in a wide range of partnerships and leading strategic networks. Thomasin is an experienced Charity Trustee has been on the Boards of organisations of varying sizes and reach. Thomasin has studied Occupational Psychology at postgraduate level and has a particular interest in leadership, inclusivity in the workplace and organisational change. She has worked closely with the University of Lincoln International Business School’s Community Organisations Group for over 15 years in an Associate role. For two years Thomasin was the Principal Investigator for an externally funded, gender and leadership research project, working with colleagues with a background in Social Psychology, Business, Education and Sociology. Thomasin has a background teaching on the Psychology BA (Hons) programme and supervises undergraduate dissertations. -
Tracey Kilcoyne
Tracey joined Lincoln Bishop University in September 2017 following 16 years working in Nottinghamshire schools as an Assistant Head Teacher, SENCO, Behaviour lead teacher and Designated Safeguarding Lead. Her ITT was completed at York St. John’s University and she started her teaching career in North East Lincolnshire. She has experience of school leadership within Community junior and infant schools and Church of England primary schools. She completed the National Professional Qualification for Headship(NPQH) in 2012. During her time in Nottinghamshire Tracey worked alongside the Nurture Group Network to support the delivery of Boxall Nurture training to school staff. She was seconded to the DfE Achievement for All pilot project in 2010 as an AfA Coach supporting teachers across the county to improve outcomes for pupils with SEND. In 2012 she gained Specialist Dyslexia Teacher status and worked as a Reading Recovery Teacher. Alongside her specialism in SEND she has been an RE Subject lead within both community and Church of England primary schools and achieved the National Society’s Bishop’s Certificate in Church of England School Leadership in 2014. Teaching Tracey primarily teaches on the undergraduate programmes with a focus on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, and the National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination (NA-SENCO). -
Dr Zoe Nye
Dr Zoe Nye trained and worked as a secondary Mathematics teacher in Boston, UK before moving overseas in 2005 to work firstly in a Women’s College in Abu Dhabi, then as a Head of Mathematics in Hong Kong and a Head of Mathematics in Argentina. Returning to the UK in 2013 she worked as a Leading Practitioner of Mathematics in Nottinghamshire before joining Lincoln Bishop University in 2015 as the Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education. Zoe is a member of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics and a Fellow of the Society for Education and Training. Teaching Zoe teaches on the PGCE Secondary Education Course where she is subject leader for Mathematics. She also teaches on the Undergraduate Degree in Mathematics and leads the third year pedagogy module. -
Jonathan Gooing
Jonathan Gooing joined Lincoln Bishop in 2004 as Senior Lecturer in Music and has was from 2014-2017 Academic Coordinator and Programme Leader for Music. He gained his first degree and Master's from the University of Sheffield where he was awarded the Sir Thomas Beecham Music Scholarship, the Julian Payne Scholarship, the final year recital prize and the piano accompaniment award. Jonathan also won the ISM/Yamaha Birmingham Accompanist of the Year award in 1999. He is currently undertaking PhD research into Historical Performance Practices in Chamber Music with Piano at the University of Huddersfield. Jonathan has extensive teaching experience in Higher Education, with posts concurrent with his work at Lincoln Bishop at Leeds College of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, where he is a Staff Pianist. In addition to his work in academia, Jonathan is also a busy freelance performing musician and regularly gives concerts and recitals throughout the country as a piano accompanist, particularly with the soprano Clare Wheat (Gooing); as a piano soloist and chamber musician. A CD featuring Jonathan playing a historic Erard piano with flautist Dr. Martyn Shaw on the Omnibus Classics label was released in 2016. Another commercial recording of Brahms Viola and Piano Sonatas with long-standing duo partner Dr. David Milsom is also due for release soon. Jonathan is also an organist and can be heard playing the organ in Lincoln Cathedral at Lincoln Bishop events such as the Advent Service, Matriculation and Graduation ceremonies. Jonathan is also the director of the Chapel Choir at Lincoln Bishop. -
Reverend Dr Tania ap Siôn
The Revd Dr Tania ap Siôn is Reader of Religions, Humanities and Education, and joined Lincoln Bishop University in 2018. She holds a BA and MA in Theology from Oxford University, an MA in Religious Studies from the University of Wales, Bangor, and a PhD in Education (focusing on theology, psychology and education) from the University of Warwick. Tania’s academic research has a strong relationship with professional practice in church-related, school-related, and community-related contexts. This is underpinned by the professional qualification of PGCE in Religious Studies, ordination as an Anglican priest in the Church in Wales, active membership of national and international organisations concerned with religion in schools, and the position of Executive Director of the St Mary’s Centre (a Christian research institute in Wales). Previously, Tania has held academic posts at Bangor University (1994-2007), Glyndwr University Wrexham (2011-2015), and the University of Warwick (2015-2018). Funded by the Wrexham (Parochial) Educational Foundation in partnership with Lincoln Bishop University, since October 2020 Tania has been working on the St Giles’ Centre Research, Development and Impact Project in Religious Education, which is an exciting and innovative development taking place in the Wrexham County Borough, North East Wales. -
Revd Prof Jeff Astley
Jeff Astley holds the part-time post of Alister Hardy Professor of Religious and Spiritual Experience. His main research interests are religious and spiritual experiences, Christian formation and ‘ordinary theology’. He is currently working on a research project jointly with the University of Warwick and Boston University, USA. For four years (1977-1981) Jeff was Head of Religious Studies at Bishop Grosseteste College and Associate Tutor at Lincoln Theological College, overseeing a joint degree programme taught at both institutions. From 1981 to 2013, he was the founding Director of the North of England Institute for Christian Education, an independent, ecumenical research and development centre (https://neice.webspace.durham.ac.uk/) with strong links with Durham University where he taught on courses in philosophical theology, science and religion and practical theology, and where he is also an honorary Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion. Jeff studied biological sciences and theology as an undergraduate at Cambridge University, and did postgraduate work in theology at Birmingham University and Durham University (where he received his PhD). He is the author or editor of over 40 books and 150 articles or essays on religious faith, experience and formation; philosophical, systematic, ordinary and practical theology; and various related issues in Christian education and spirituality. -
Martin Smith
Martin Smith joined Lincoln Bishop in 2016 and is the technician for Psychology. His main role is supporting staff and students with using the variety of Psychology equipment we have available in the department, such as the virtual reality headset and BIOPAC devices. Martin delivers a number of practical sessions across the degree to help support student understanding of psychological concepts. Martin also co-ordinates the SONA system, which is used to help advertise staff and student research projects. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Lincoln and completed a Research Master's looking at using Virtual Reality as a means of investigating how we use language for objects that are in motion. Martin is part of the Psychology, Health and Wellbeing Research and Knowledge Exchange unit, where he offers additional technical support for other members of the unit. -
Dr Alan Malpass
Senior Lecturer – Military History alan.malpass@bishopg.ac.uk Dr Alan Malpass is a historian who specialises in 20th century military history, particularly civilian internment and prisoners of war. Before joining in 2019, Alan taught at Sheffield Hallam University, where he completed his PhD. Alan teaches a range of modules across the History and Military History courses. Inspired to study history by playing a lot of board/computer games, Alan incorporates them into his teaching at every opportunity.
