Stephen Smith
Head of Partnerships Stephen joined Lincoln Bishop in September 2015 from the University of Northampton where he previously worked for six years in a number of roles including Programme Leader for Secondary PGCE, Programme Leader for Primary and Secondary Professional Studies, and as Head of Partnerships. During his time in Northampton he also taught on a number of primary and secondary programmes, postgraduate and undergraduate course – principally in the areas of Professional Studies and History. Stephen has worked as an External Examiner for a large training provider in Essex and for the University of Derby on their Assessment Only programme. Much of his work has been directly involved with schools and he has been on the Executive Boards and steering groups of a number of Teaching School Alliances in the East Midlands and is currently taking on similar roles in schools in the Lincolnshire region. Research Stephen’s, research for his MEd has been focused on the area of developing teacher identity, particularly in the role played by the Teacher Standards in this development. His main research interests lie in the area of ‘teacher identity’, particularly regarding trainee and emerging teachers. -
Dr Rose Roberto
From October 2019 until December 2023, Rose had two roles at Lincoln Bishop University – she was the Teaching Resources Collection Librarian and a part-time lecturer for the School of Humanities, lecturing on history and heritage related courses. Her current research broadly examines the intersection of visual culture and educational publishing, and the hidden histories related to class, gender, and race imbedded in the material culture of the transnational book trade during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Prior to undertaking her PhD, Rose was a librarian and archivist at various cultural and scientific institutions in the USA and the UK for over a decade. As Lincoln Bishop’s subject librarian for Initial Teacher Training, TESOL and Children's Literature, she is responsible for the Teaching Resources Collection (TRC), a self-contained collection within Lincoln Bishop Library which houses specialist materials for trainee teachers and those working or intending to work in education, as well as those studying children’s literature. Rose maintained the Children’s Literature Collection, which has been developed over the past 50 years. It contains a comprehensive and unique representation of work by classic and contemporary writers of children’s books. Rose worked with the RKEU, Literature and Literacies (LiLi) to facilitate the students and staff of Lincoln Bishop's use of the TRC, and their broader knowledge of Children’s Literature. With Dr Amy Webster she co-edited The Four Corners. Along with Dr Sheine Pert, she was also a founding member of Telling it Like it is Teaching Resource Group (TILIIs) which engages in discussion, debate, and sharing of useful education resources in the Lincoln Bishop Library to address the long-standing corrosive effects of inequality, and the legacies of other Post-Colonial issues on our contemporary society. -
Louise Connolly
Louise has established a career in education over the last 24 years. Having previously worked with the University as a Visiting Tutor for three years before joining the team permanently, Louise joined Lincoln Bishop University in September 2020 in a permanent role as a Senior Lecturer in Initial Primary Teacher Education where she now works on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Louise leads academic writing, research modules and also supervises masters students through their dissertations. Prior to joining the university academic team, Louise was a teacher in primary schools for nearly 20 years. Throughout her time in school, she carried out a number of roles such as Foundation and Key Stage One Leader, English Lead, History Lead and was also a Special Educational Needs Coordinator for 15 years. She later became a Head Teacher of a large primary school in a deprived area in Nottinghamshire and was also the Safeguarding Lead and Special Educational Needs Coordinator for a Multi-Academy Trust.Louise completed a Masters in Education in 2019 and predominantly focused on areas of Special Educational Needs and Emotional Health. Louise achieved Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy in 2021 and is in the final stages of her PhD where her topic of interest is around worry and wellbeing in undergraduate student teachers. She is a review editor for an educational journal and also an external examiner for Initial Teacher Education at another university. Louise also enjoys a role as a Primary School Governor in a local school. Louise has previously written articles on educational areas of interest in the TES and other educational magazines. She had her first book published by Sage in 2022 in their Super Quick Skills series about proofreading essays and also recently had an article approved for publication by The Teacher Education Advancement Network (TEAN). -
Professor Julian Stern
Professor of Education and Religion julian.stern@bishopg.ac.uk Julian Stern works on education and religion, leading research projects and organisations, and supervising doctorates. He qualified as a piano teacher, and then as a teacher of humanities and social sciences, and was a school teacher for fourteen years. Moving into teacher education and research, he has worked in universities in London, Yorkshire, and now Lincolnshire. Themes of his work include the philosophy of schooling, religious education, spirituality in education, research methods, and issues related to solitude, silence and loneliness. Stefanie Jacklin
Stef joined Lincoln Bishop University in January 2021, on a part- time basis whilst still working as a primary school teacher. In April, she moved across to Lincoln Bishop full- time. Stef is an ex-student of Lincoln Bishop University and has many fond memories of the University. Stef started her teaching career in Peterborough and then moved to Lincolnshire. During Stef’s many years of teaching, she has led a range of subjects including Science, English, and Humanities. Humanities, diversity, and black history are areas which really interest Stef. In her previous teaching role, Stef was School Direct and NQT Lead mentor for a multi-academy Trust in Lincolnshire. As a Senior Lecturer, Stef primarily teaches and contributes to the PGCE 5-11 programme as well as contributing to the Undergraduate and School Direct programmes. -
Dr Amy Webster
Amy joined Lincoln Bishop in the summer of 2020 as a Senior Lecturer in Education Studies after finishing her PhD at the University of Cambridge. She has a BA (Hons) in Education with Primary Qualified Teacher Status from Durham University and an MPhil in Education with distinction from Cambridge. She was also previously an Associate Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. Her doctoral project focused on the historical recovery and analysis of British series of children’s classics using digital humanities methods, particularly historical shifts in the titles included in series and how these classic works have been abridged and repackaged since the turn of the twentieth century. Amy is part of the Literature and Literacies (LiLi) Research and Knowledge Exchange Unit and is co-editor of The Four Corners, Lincoln Bishop’s newsletter on children’s literature. She teaches on the Education Studies undergraduate programme as well as the new MA in Children’s Literature and Literacies. She also supervises dissertations on the MA in Education. -
Dr Amanda Arbouin
Dr Amanda Arbouin joined Lincoln Bishop University as an Honorary Senior Fellow in Education Studies in August 2021. She has expertise in the Sociology of Education, with a particular focus on the effects of race, class and gender in education and employment. -
Revd Canon Professor Leslie J Francis
Leslie Francis holds the part-time post of Professor of Religions, Psychology and Education. He works with doctoral students in fields that connect religious studies, theology, psychology, and education. Before joining Lincoln Bishop University he held chairs in Pastoral Theology at Lampeter, Practical Theology at Bangor, Religions and Education at Warwick, and Religions and Psychology at Warwick. Currently he holds visiting positions in universities in Pretoria and Newfoundland and serves as Canon Theologian at Liverpool Cathedral. -
Dr Sunny Dhillon
Prior to joining the Education Studies team in November 2021, Sunny spent five years as a learning developer at the University of Leeds, as well as at Lincoln Bishop, where he also worked as a Visiting Tutor in the Theology, Ethics and Society department. Sunny conducted his doctoral research through the Philosophy department at Cardiff University, focussing on the concept of utopia through the works of Friedrich W. Nietzsche, Ernst Bloch and Theodor W. Adorno. Sunny’s research interests include Critical Theory (The Frankfurt School), Nietzsche, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Utopia and Philosophy of Education. His current research projects critically explore education as ontotheological principle, and student engagement from the perspective of academics in the social sciences who often experience a ‘disclosure dilemma’ when deciding what perspectives to share with students across levels of HE. Sean Ingoldsby
Sean Ingoldsby has extensive experience of teaching in early years and primary school settings, and in tertiary education both in the UK and overseas. Over the course of his career, he has taken on a wide range of coordination and leadership roles including early years coordinator and primary SENCO positions and more recently, on a variety of undergraduate teacher training programmes specialising in, Early Childhood Education, Educational Technology and TESOL, each of which is leveraged in his teaching on the BA Education Studies programme. Sean currently leads modules on inclusion and diversity, the impact of context in the learning process, and of diverse perspectives on education on both national and global policy and practice, and educational research. His research interests include the impact of context on learning, embodied cognition and educational technology.
