Professor Julian Stern
Professor of Education and Religion julian.stern@lincolnbishop.ac.uk Julian Stern works on education and religion, leading research projects and organisations, and supervising doctorates. He qualified as a piano teacher, and then as a teacher of humanities and social sciences, and was a school teacher for fourteen years. Moving into teacher education and research, he has worked in universities in London, Yorkshire, and now Lincolnshire. Themes of his work include the philosophy of schooling, religious education, spirituality in education, research methods, and issues related to solitude, silence and loneliness. Stefanie Jacklin
Stef joined Lincoln Bishop University in January 2021, on a part- time basis whilst still working as a primary school teacher. In April, she moved across to Lincoln Bishop full- time. Stef is an ex-student of Lincoln Bishop University and has many fond memories of the University. Stef started her teaching career in Peterborough and then moved to Lincolnshire. During Stef’s many years of teaching, she has led a range of subjects including Science, English, and Humanities. Humanities, diversity, and black history are areas which really interest Stef. In her previous teaching role, Stef was School Direct and NQT Lead mentor for a multi-academy Trust in Lincolnshire. As a Senior Lecturer, Stef primarily teaches and contributes to the PGCE 5-11 programme as well as contributing to the Undergraduate and School Direct programmes. -

Dr Amy Webster
Amy joined Lincoln Bishop in the summer of 2020 as a Senior Lecturer in Education Studies after finishing her PhD at the University of Cambridge. She has a BA (Hons) in Education with Primary Qualified Teacher Status from Durham University and an MPhil in Education with distinction from Cambridge. She was also previously an Associate Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. Her doctoral project focused on the historical recovery and analysis of British series of children’s classics using digital humanities methods, particularly historical shifts in the titles included in series and how these classic works have been abridged and repackaged since the turn of the twentieth century. Amy is part of the Literature and Literacies (LiLi) Research and Knowledge Exchange Unit and is co-editor of The Four Corners, Lincoln Bishop’s newsletter on children’s literature. She teaches on the Education Studies undergraduate programme as well as the new MA in Children’s Literature and Literacies. She also supervises dissertations on the MA in Education. -

Dr Amanda Arbouin
Dr Amanda Arbouin joined Lincoln Bishop University as an Honorary Senior Fellow in Education Studies in August 2021. She has expertise in the Sociology of Education, with a particular focus on the effects of race, class and gender in education and employment. -

Revd Canon Professor Leslie J Francis
Leslie Francis holds the part-time post of Professor of Religions, Psychology and Education. He works with doctoral students in fields that connect religious studies, theology, psychology, and education. Before joining Lincoln Bishop University he held chairs in Pastoral Theology at Lampeter, Practical Theology at Bangor, Religions and Education at Warwick, and Religions and Psychology at Warwick. Currently he holds visiting positions in universities in Pretoria and Newfoundland and serves as Canon Theologian at Liverpool Cathedral. -

Dr Sunny Dhillon
Sunny works as a Senior Lecturer across the Education Studies and Theology, Ethics and Society degree courses. He conducted his doctoral research through the Philosophy department at Cardiff University, focussing on the concept of utopia through the works of Friedrich W. Nietzsche, Ernst Bloch and Theodor W. Adorno.Sunny’s research interests include Critical Theory (The Frankfurt School), Nietzsche, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Utopia and Philosophy of Education. Dr Adam Foxon
Dr. Adam Foxon is a senior lecturer at Lincoln Bishop on our Foundation Year programme. He also lectures on Theology, Philosophy and Ethics. He completed his PhD in 2022 entitled, Quod Homo sit Minor Mundus: Robert Grosseteste and the Potentiality of the Material World: Microcosmism and Deification in the Development of a Didactic Weltanschauung. Dr. Foxon has worked in schools and colleges around his work at Lincoln Bishop and actively encourages public exposure to the academic world. He is open to conversations surrounding academic outreach, particularly in areas concerning history, philosophy, and religion. His academic work and interests are incredibly varied. He is a medievalist at heart (12th-13th centuries), but he also delves into other areas, from: historic and modern perspectives on the paradigm between science and religion; arguments for the existence of God; the Christian notion of microcosmism (and its effect on deificatory convictions); and process theology, to: exotheology (theological thought related to extra-terrestials) and the relationship between religion and football. -

Dr Darren Poole
Dr Darren Poole is a lecturer in Military History at Bishop Grosseteste University. He holds a Ph.D. in Military History from the University of Chester. In addition to his History qualifications, he also has degrees in Geography, Education and Management. Before joining Lincoln Bishop, Darren taught History at both the University of Chester and University Centre, Shrewsbury. At Chester and Shrewsbury, he taught all aspects of Military History and also supported learners who were new to Higher Education, including international students joining English universities for the first time. Prior to becoming a lecturer, Darren was a Head of History and Geography in secondary schools across England. He still retains links to schools and education. His research interests include aerial warfare, counterinsurgency and the voices of the oppressed and ignored in conflict. He is particularly committed to promoting the ‘unheard’ voices of war i.e. those civilians neglected by conventional military accounts of combat. Darren is a published author and is currently working on a book examining the underreported violence that terrorists often inflict upon their own people. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. -

Dr Lucinda Newns
Senior Lecturer in English Lucinda Newns is a Senior Lecturer in English specialising in postcolonial and environmental literature. She joined Lincoln Bishop in 2023 after previous positions at King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London and the University of Manchester. She has also held a research fellowship at the Education University of Hong Kong (2020-2021). She was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship to complete her PhD at London Metropolitan University and holds an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) and a BA from New York University. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. -

Professor Matthew Innes
Professor Matt Innes sits on the University Executive Board as Senior Strategic Advisor, working closely with the Vice Chancellor and the University’s academic and professional leadership to support strategic development, collaboration and innovation.Matt’s academic and professional experience and interests span University leadership, organisational change, history and policy. His professional career has been inspired by a commitment to social mobility, and a determination to ensure that ladders of opportunity like those from which he had benefited, were accessible for future generations.By background Matt is a prize-winning author and historian, whose academic career has progressed through research and teaching roles at the Universities of Cambridge, Birmingham, York and London, and he has served as a College and University Governor, Head of School, Dean of Faculty, and Pro Vice Chancellor. He recently completed a period as Deputy Vice Chancellor at Birkbeck, the torch bearer for educational access within the University of London federation. At Birkbeck he implemented values-led strategic changes in response to financial and policy challenges, ensuring that a diverse and disadvantaged student body could succeed through flexible blended study pathways from Foundation through to Postgraduate which allowed University to be combined with caring, family and work responsibilities. Matt is strongly engaged in advocacy and policy work around widening access, adult education and lifelong learning.At Lincoln Bishop University, Matt is working closely with colleagues on a range of strategic developments. These include preparing for the Government’s new Lifelong Learning Entitlement to support flexible modular learning and regional partnerships; developing an institutional plan to embed social purpose at the heart of all the University does; ensuring that national league tables reflect the University’s outstanding student experience; and supporting academic development and research impact in the ‘Applied Humanities’, Business and the Professions, and Education.
