This one-year Top-Up apprenticeship is designed for experienced managers who already hold a relevant Level 5 qualification (such as the Operations Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship or CMI Level 5 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Management & Leadership). The programme is delivered against the nationally recognised Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship Standard. On successful completion of the programme and End-Point Assessment (EPA), you will gain the BA (Hons) Business, Leadership and Management and have the option to gain professional body recognition alongside the apprenticeship.

About this apprenticeship

Learning Hours:
Off-the-job training is a statutory requirement for an English apprenticeship. This includes theory, practical training, learning support, time spent writing assignments and revision, all delivered during your normal working hours.

What you will study
Course Modules you will cover as part of the apprenticeship:
This module focuses on “strategic choice” and translating strategy into action.
It will allow you to build your understanding of organisational strategy and planning in different business sectors and to develop the operational plans in order to deliver the strategy.
This module adopts an experiential and practice-based learning approach to support help you build your understanding of the role that finance and accounting plays in organisational strategy.
It considers financial strategies and the production of financial reports, looking at procurement, contracting and the legal requirements faced by business. It explores budgeting, sources of finance and basic financial accounting principles enabling you to access financial data and examine its validity.
Through completing the assessment for this module you will be able to: manage budgets, control expenditure and produce financial reports.
This module will help you develop a critical understanding of approaches for leading, managing and implementing change.
Through this module you will learn about strategies, skills and techniques to manage change with opportunities to draw on your own experience and organisation as well as examples from other organisations you may be familiar with.
Apprentices will actively demonstrate an ability to lead and drive change within the organisation, identifying barriers/challenges and how to overcome them.
Many leaders and managers find it difficult managing change, especially if it affects people so models and frameworks will be explored to support learning.
This module explores the strategic management of human resources focusing on recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, talent and diversity management and workforce planning.
You will consider Human Resource practices in your own organisation (or one you are familiar with) in terms of the management of people and the contributions of the wider HR function to the strategy of the organisation.
You will be introduced to the theory of talent management, in addition, you will explore the place and purpose of performance management and appraisal and the concept of reward and recognition in engaging and motivating employees.
This module will introduce the psychology and sociology of organisations, and the important organisational structures and cultures needed to build resilient and sustainable organisations.
It will encourage you to think more critically about how culture, development and design affects an organisation’s resilience and stability through responsible leadership. The module will guide you to critically analyse the interrelation between individuals, groups and organisations and their influence on one another.
This is the compulsory work-based learning module for students continuing their study from L5 on the Apprenticeship pathway.
Through this module, you will have the opportunity to gather, collate and present a range of evidence about your professional practice that meets the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviour requirements of the Chartered Managers Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) standard.
This module will give you further opportunity to reflect on your professional practice while extending and enhancing their knowledge and understanding of Business, Leadership and Management gained at L4 and L5.
You will develop and apply a range of skills and demonstrate a range of appropriate behaviours as required by the apprenticeship standard. Supervision and input from a workplace mentor will provide supporting and confirmatory evidence of performance and progressions.
This module articulates the requirement of the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship standard for students to identify and design a change intervention in the workplace that can make a difference to the organisation.
The Synoptic Work Based Project encapsulates the skills, knowledge and behaviours in the Apprenticeship standard and provides a substantive evidence base for you to relate and demonstrate the application of skills, knowledge and behaviour.
Through undertaking this module, you will demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of project management and will evidence your project management skills through planning, organising and managing resources in order to achieve organisational goals.
The outputs from the Work-based project form a key element of End Point Assessment which supports you to meet the outcomes in the standard.
The module will guide you in defining, designing and delivering your project through support from a Practice tutor/Work coach. The practical requirements for the delivery of synoptic projects are set out in Annex 2 of the CMDA standard. The project should be conducted as part of the apprentice’s normal work.
Entry requirements
Applicants must hold one of the following:
- CMI Level 5 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Management & Leadership (or equivalent)
- Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship
All apprentices must be resident in the UK and in employment (with at least 50% of working hours in England). Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprenticeship and employment role.
Typically, candidates will also have achieved qualifications in English and mathematics at a minimum of level 2 or equivalent (GCSE grade A*/9- C/4), and demonstrate ICT skills at this level. Where these are not held, support is available to achieve them during the apprenticeship.
There are no upper age restrictions, although all apprentices must be aged over 18 as a minimum.
Employer responsibilities:
- Identify suitable apprentices for the programme
- Ensure the apprentice is undertaking real, productive work
- Allow the apprentice to attend off-the-job training and assessment as part of their normal paid working hours
- Take part in quarterly reviews with Lincoln Bishop University
- Employ the apprentice for the full duration of their apprenticeship (usually at least 30 hours per week)
Fees & Funding
Costs may be covered by government funding and/or your employer.
- Employers who pay the Apprenticeship Levy will pay fees directly through the levy contribution.
- Non-levy paying businesses may be able to claim 95% of the cost of tuition fees from the Government.
